Had a little down time due to travel so I had mechanic take a look at tensioners. We are hoping to do more and longer trips this summer and I didn't want to push it.
So here they are at 38,890. Both looked the same.

Mechanic said maybe a few thousand more miles-
Decision time:
Let 'em go a while.
Replace in kind.
Or Upgrade.
Installed Gear driven cams! And all that goes with them. We will see if they do all they are supposed to do.
We are good to go once again.
The cam posts were very valuable in making some decisions. Thanks to those of you that share your knowledge and experience.
My only decision would be new shoes, hydraulic or gear - I would not consider, having opened the cam chest putting the old ones back in. I think new ones are $60 a pair.

What year was your bike? Did you use synthetic oil?
Thats why I upgraded to a gear set. I did the 95" build in addition. My wrench has 2 other bikes at his shop that are in bad shape because of the tensioners. If you plan to keep your bike upgrade or watch tensioners closely.

.
Synthetic may help or may not. There is 40 pounds of presure at all time on the tensioners models 99 through 2006. New hydrolic tensioners have 5 pounds of pressure on them. More you zoom zoom fast starts hard torque more likely to destroy tensioners quicker. I dont trust them so I went gear drive.
Bike is an '03 Classic
Had 15K on it when I bought it.
I use synthetic.
Don't ride it hard - 2-up most times - out for a cruise. But I do "put it through it's paces" and don't baby it.
