Default What Makes A Metric???

This is a short Q & A from the November issue of V-Twin magazine...

I'm sort of confused about your "Metric of the Month" for August 2006. The bike is a Victory, isn't Victory an American-made motorcycle? I was under the impression that 'metric bikes' are bikes made out of the country. - 2005 Kingpin Owner -

No, a metric bike is any motorcycle that uses metric sizes for all its fasteners. Therefore, you can only use metric tools on these bikes. As such, all Japanese motorcycles are metric, but so are Victory bikes. Interestingly, the Harley-Davidson V-Rod is also a metric bike.

Thoughts? Agree? Disagree?

That is true, and the metric designation is rather bogus. Other than requiring another set of tools (yay!), metric fasteners are not better or worse.

VRod is American, so is Victory.

I think metric is used instead of Rice burner which would suggest Japanese only. Metric, though not technically correct would also include European bikes, China, etc, etc. (Anything not American made.)

'Metric' sounds less jingoistic than 'Imported' (V-Rod = Porsche = Germany). And I'm quite sure nobody was thinking of VictoryÂŽ when they started saying it either.

Scuse me. I guess all those Brit bikes I rode fall in the category BS for British Standard. I guess we really need to put into categories; BS, Metric, Rice Cookers, Spaghetti Cookers, Rusky Ripoffs (Ural), Brawt Cookers (BMW), etc..

I see folks saying metric sometimes when they are trying to be more polite instead of saying rice burner or crotch rocket. Metric as far as the tool type would include a lot of bikes, like V-Rod and Victory that most folks don't consider or want to consider as "metrics". I bet there are a tons of folks out there that don't even know those bikes use metric, i didn't till i got last months issue of one of my magazines.

Excuse my dumb question but is British Standard a different measurement of tools as well? I strongly considered buying a Triumph at one time....just curious, would I have needed a new set of tools to work on it?

I was unaware that Harley made a biek that used metric fasteners. Oh well, another term I wont use anymore. Who cares what kinda fasteners a bike as on it. A bike is a bike is all I can think after hearing that. Who really cares. I ride a Harley.
