Default Harley or BMW for CHP?

Okay, what's your opinion on this story? Seems to be a big mess to be honest. There's an article about it in the thread below, 7th post.

Edit: The thread itself is mostly bashing, with the occasional interesting post. You're warned.

I am starting to see a lot of BMW motorcycles in the police depts in Oregon. I am sure they handle better but most are just used for traffic control so the Harley would do the job just fine. In my humble opinion.

I would hate to see the police departments switch to Toyotas for their choice of police cars.

I'd like to see them stay with the traditional Harley's, but whatever floats their boats alright with me, cause I don't have to live there...

Local Police Department has moved to BMW...Noticed it about a year ago or so. Haven't seen a CHP lately but the last one was on a Harley.

Here in Jersey I recently saw a cop aboard a Beemer. Thought maybe he was a Commissioner or something. I dunno. The BMW is a more agile bike and no doubt more maneuverable in pursuit situations, but it just don't seem right. Kinda like watching a cowboy riding a Llama.

dude, your so right!

like one time, i was rippin thru maryland, and one of them suitcase bike cops pulled me over,
and he was like "hey, do you know why i pulled you over?"
and i said, "dude, youre not even on a real bike. hahaha..."
and he said "what?!?!?"
and i was all like "BURN! hahahah"
and he was like "dammit! i knew the dept should have gotten a harley! without american iron noone takes
me seriously. oh how those bean counters have undermined my authority when they sold us out
to the germans who make these fast suitcase bikes that dont have any character!"

yeah, that was awkward... so i was like "hey, good luck with that. dint mean to hassle you
about not having a harley and all.

and he was all "yeah, dont worry about it, this is the third time this has happened today..."

yeah.

good times.

I live in the Phoenix area and I don't think any major agencies around here use Harley's (with the exception of the County Sheriff's who have a small motor unit). Most have a mixture of old Kawasakis and BMW's. The department where I work started out with Kawasaki's, but went to BMW's a few years ago. They tested HD's when they were moving away from the Kawasaki's but decided against them. Apparently the motor officers spend alot of time sitting on their bikes at idle (running radar, watching traffic lights, etc.) and didn't like the HD's vibration at idle. They're now switching to the Honda ST1300's because whenever they need a BMW part for repairs, it takes a couple of weeks to get it. Apparently, many of the other agencies in the area are also going away from BMW's to Honda's for the same reason.
