Got a 25K service coming up b4 STURGIS. Manual says replacement at 25K. Anyone just replace the filter and and reuse the self sealing screws and gasket? Thanx.
Reading this, I just thought about those inexpensive inline glass filters I used in the old days. You could see if you had fuel flowing, and if it needed cleaning, 5 min job at no cost.
What makes my car gas filter so special that it'll go 100,000 miles before a change? Well following that philosophy I'm still running my original filter on my '00 FLTRSEI and just turned 91,000 miles on it last week. ( Goes 37 miles to work every day.)
"Dirty" looking filters are not BLOCKED filters.
My plan is to swap filters when I do my wheel bearings at 100,000, and so far so good...
I posted about not being able to use the full 4.9 gallons in my tank (3.8 primary and 1.1 reserve) and a few guys suggested the fuel filter could be the problem. Anyone else have this situation, and if so did replacing the fuel filter cure it?
You have a reserve on your bike? My carbed 98 has a reserve---my 03 fuel injected has a yellow light. My 98 only has only a factory screen built into the fuel selector. I had to add a filter downstream.

It's a crap shoot. My 03 with 10,000 miles had a lot of junk in it and definitely needed changed. My 99 at 10,000 miles had zero junk. Small price for peace of mind.

everyone is going to have a different amount of dirt, depending on where you live and what gas stations you use. It could vary even across brands. One Sunoco station your next door neighbor uses might have new, glass lined tanks or whatever, and you might be using the sunoco near your work, which might have older, dirty tanks or something.
who knows? Mine is due for a change in 3K miles too... will do it myself then.
