Default Dealership Records

Can one dealership service department use their computer to access files on another dealership computer? For example can the HD Dealer in San Francisco pull up records from the HD Dealer in San Diego? Can they enter in a VIN number and see ALL the work, dates, part numbers and mileage on it? I ask because a guy at work is looking at a used FatBoy. It's the typical story, a 2003 Anniversary Edition with low mileage 16k on the clock. The bike looks good but he is wondering if that is actual miles or maybe a changed speedo. I told him that older bikes with low miles are quite common but he wants to check it out anyway. He wants to know for sure if the 95" kit and cams were done and who did them. Can he go to any dealership and have them run the VIN and pull up all the records? I'm thinking that would be the only way to know.

No but they can enter the vin and see where the bike was purchased and who the original purchaser was...That might put you on the trail to the information that you are searching for.

Actually yes they can. If the work has been done at a authorized Harley dealer, they can look up the Vin # and see what has been done to it. I bought my bike at a dealer in a different state. When I took it in to the local dealer for a recall, they were able to tell me what kit was installed including parts numbers at the previous dealer when I bought it.

The dealer here entered the VIN and then told me that a recall had been performed. I think some info can be accessed through the dealer network.

My dealer said they weren't able to see what other dealers have done, though it may be possible to see if recalls had been performed.

A dealer can check to see if a recall has been performed. There is no way to check against regular maint/service records. And, no they can't check to see who installed your chrome doohicky.

Well. Like I said the local dealer here was able to tell what big bore kit I had by only the vin #.

I agree with some of the previos posters', if the part is an H-D part, and put on by an authorized H-D dealer, it is entered into H-D's system for warranty purposes. However, if you put on say some vance n hines pipes, they will not show in this (shared) system between dealers.
