Back in the early 70's a friend of mine lost his leg due to a 5 mph crash. He was treated in a Hospital and released. Soon after he developed gangrene and lost the leg.

I wrecked one time in shorts and a tee, had rash everywhere. Had some guy driving by give me a lift home, just left the bike on the side of the road. Tried to tough it out and wash myself in a tub. Fk that, after about passing out from the pain several times I had a buddy run me up to the ER. They scrubbed the rocks out.

Yeah, you pay slightly higher taxes in this system but that portion is less than what you would pay to a health insurance provider. It's not perfect, sometimes there are waits to see a specialist for a non critical procedure, and it does not pay for prescription drugs, but over all everyone gets treated the best way possible and it works pretty well due to the efficiencies it allows. You also do not loose coverage if you loose your job or are elderly and no one looses their home over health care expenses. Another benefit of universal health care is increased life expectancy for those who do not have insurance. The average life expentency in Canada is 81.2 years, the average life expectancy in the US is 78.1 years.

When you remove the portion of health care dollars going to profits for the insurance companies, all the additional billing and accounting overhead required, and private hospitals taking their cut the cost per person for health care goes down 50% or more. I don't understand why so many people are against universal health care in the US?
I also live in a country with universal health care and have exactly the same experience. Americans are strange...
