technically yes. but many folks are doing it without taking off the inner primary by grinding a small amount of material away so that the compensator can fit on without removing it.

there are a couple of threads that show where and how much needs to be removed for it to fit.

I think you can change a stock one with a stock one without taking off the inner or grinding but the SE compensators are a little beefier so you need to grind some material off or take off the inner primary to install one of those.

What you guys are saying is a bit inaccurate. The purpose for grinding is because HD manufactured a ridge on the inner primary cover to prevent you from removing the STOCK stator cover. This ridge serves no other purpose other than increasing labor costs to remove the stator cover. The grinding has absolutely nothing to do with the SE Compensator being "beefier."

I recently installed the SE compenstor on my 07 UC. The stock stator cover came off with no problems, but I had to do some grinding to get the SE stator cover on.

You know what I've found interesting, I think HD machined that ridge there after they realized there was a compensator problem...just to increase labor charges.
