Mostly SAE, but I think the battery and calipers are metric... Not sure what else.

I personally would go to Sears and get the tools(Craftsman)you need.Best to wait for a sale.If your really tight ,go to Harbor Freight.
I think some of the "tool kits" that dealers and catalogs sell are over priced.

You need a 10 mm, 12 point socket to take off the front brake calipers. You can't remove the front wheel without removing the brake calipers first. Check the size of your rear axle nut and get a good open end wrench in that size. Then you won't have to take off your muffler in order to remove the rear wheel. Get a spark plug gap check/adjust tool with one of the gauges in .040 in. Get two torque wrenches from Sears; in-lbs in 3/8 in. drive and ft-lbs in 1/2 in. drive. Get the proper sized socket for your fork caps. Tighten them with other type of wrench and you will mar them. Get a really quality set of torx wrench sockets and make sure it has a No. 27. Get a good set of Sears standard sockets and another set in metric. Buy extra 3/8 in. drive ratchets. Can't have too many. Get a 3/8 in. and a 1/2 in. breaker bar.

Buy the H-D Service Manual for your model and year of bike. Tab the pages with torque values.

Sears Craftsman tools are now being sold on QVC. Check out their schedule for the next time that it comes up. You can save 50% by buying sets thru QVC.

Buy the Sears 'Yellow' bike jack the next time it is on sale. It is invaluable for all maintenance and modifications. My XL 1200 R is setting on it right now just because I needed a little extra space in the garage for a special project. I made a little nook for the XL and rolled it sideways into the nook.

After you buy your basic sets, the advise to go to pawn shops is a good one for all the little extras that you will want to add.

If your going to do any serious wrenching, then I would suggest a couple of torque wrenches,
one for inch pounds, and one for foot pounds. Check Sears. I also got a cheap LCD type digital caliper guage (vernier micrometer)
Its real handy for measuring ID's or OD's on bolts and fasteners, or a lot of other things.
I just saw one on Ebay for $4.99, the shipping was $15, but its still a good deal.

Peace

For my bike I got the Windzone EK-1HD. It seems to have most of what you'd need
if you broke down on the road.
