Sorry if this has been done before, but my personal experience has surprised me.
I recently purchased another Harley that had 16" ape hangers, something I had no experience with, and previously had no desire to even try.
I'm interested in the experiences that any of you may have had.
I ask that ONLY those of you who have at least tried ape hanger bars to participate.
I'll hold comments on my experience until later.
Feel free to post specifics about your decision if you like.
So far more than 70% that have tried them have stayed with apes of some sort.
After only a few weeks of personal experience with 16 inchers...a short ride on my other FXD with stock bars actually felt "strange"...the more I ride with the apes the more I like them!
I have 14 inchers, but they really feel like mini apes to me. I'm 6'3" and the bars are still a couple of inches below my shoulders. I am satisfied comfort-wise with the 14's on my Streetglide, anything taller would have started to look goofy with the fairing I think, but would have still been comfy. If I ever get a Road King I'll definitely have 18's.
I bought my bike with apes on them already. I like them, but as soon as I can afford it, I am going to go with mini apes. I think the mini's will be a little more distance friendly. I don't do very long rides often, but when I do I use a cramp buster on my throttle. With the apes I have now, I can't really rest my palm on the throttle lever comfortably.
Have 14" on my 09 FLHX. I also put a C&C seat on which lowered me an inch. My hands are a couple of inches above my shoulders which is perfect for me. I had 16" on my 07 FLSTC, 16" on my 00 Wide Glide, 16" on my 94 Wide Glide and 18" on my 68 FLH. I'm 6' tall.

Mine are 16's, and with the stock seat my hands are 4" higher than my shoulders (bars are rolled forward to near vertical). I'm 6' even...and all arms and legs.
