Default Oil Change Question

I'm trying to learn to work on my bike. i hate the fact that i don't know anything about my bike other than how to ride it.

I'm starting out with my oil change. this may seem very trival to a lot of people but i'm new to this. My question is once i've drained the Oil out pull off the old filter. Then i pure a couple oz into my new filter and attach, next do i want to reattach the drain hose back to the muffler mount or should i pour a little oil in first to remove air from the hose.

Trying to determine if trapping air in the drain hose will cause a problem.

I'm doing my 20k service with help from a neighbor. I would ask him but he is on vacation and i will not bother him with this.

just tryin to learn to wrench a little thanks for the help.

Sounds like you don't have a touring bike so I can't answer your question. But I'd highly recommend getting a service manual if you want to start working on your bike. Money well spent.

I have a 2003 sportster 1200XL. And i defiantly have a manually; mentions issues with trapping air but not very clear on how to avoid it or what will happen.

Brad I had a sporty for two years and read the same thing. I asked a few experts and they told me as long as you put oil in the filter and smear some oil on the filter gasket with your finger you are good to go. I did it for two years and never had any issues. Next they will be telling you to burb the sporty before you put it to bed....

Unless I'm mistaken, the air in the drain hose should just bubble right up into the reservoir where there is always air anyway.

I agree that it is a good idea to start the filter with a bit of oil in it, but as soon as you start the bike it should purge all air from the system in the first few seconds anyway.

If you try to pour oil up the drain hose and then clamp it back on the plug, you're gonna make a mess.

Any air will find it's way to the top of the oil tank and the oil pump will laugh at any air headed it's way due to volume/flow.
