Default Road Trip

So, I am heading out on my first "long" road trip in a few weeks. I'm one of five guys from work heading dow from Winnipeg Manitoba to Deadwood, SD. 700+ miles in a day there and same on the way back.

Riding my 2002 HD Super Glide Sport. Bought a windshield and seat bag for the trip. Figure I am ready.

Question is, what "Road Trip" equipment should I pack i.e. tools etc.

I take a tool kit, duct tape, tie wraps, electrical tape, spare fuses, shop rags, microfiber cloths and windshield cleaner.

Have fun.

Here is my answer from another thread. I primarily ride long distances.

The tools thread comes up a lot. In the past I've always taken the time to list out tools I carry etc. In my case it is an extensive list.

I've thought about this question a lot recently I believe there is a more correct answer though.

The answer is, take the tools that you know how to use and, can and will use on the side of the road or motel parking lot.

For some of us that means a lot of tools. We have the experience to wrench on our bikes whenever needed.

For others, that is not the case. It isn't a bad thing. I know peope that are not inclined or able to do the most simple of tasks on their bike when it is parked in their garage. It makes no sense for them to load up $400 worth and 30 pounds of tools they don't know how to use repairing their bike.

If you are comfortable tearing into the engine while the bike sits outside your tent, take the tools you feel you need to be comfortable in your travels. if your mechanical ability is limited to dialing a cell phone and providing a credit card number, that is cool too, your list of what to pack is much simpler.

If you are asking what tools to take, my guess is you are not wrenching on your bike a lot yourself, so don't take tools to do a repair you can't complete without your shop manual. If you do all your own wrenching, you can make a run through your tool boxes and know what you need to take on a trip to be covered.

Whichever camp you fall into is fine. It isn't good or bad. Just take what you need and feel competent to use.

Just a thought.

(and if you still want the list I carry on long trips, just ask)

***PASSPORT!!!*** Keep it handy... Emerson border crossing is only 1hr and 45mins from Winnipeg.

Required Medications - insulin, EpiPen, inhalers... etc. If there is a lot of meds... safest bet is to have a letter from your doctor.

Travel Insurance. http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/mhsip/leavingmanitoba.html

A couple of other items I would suggest is...
1. GPS unit. Maps are useless in the Black Hills!!!
2. Camera w/ lots of memory
3. First Aid Kit w/ band-aids, tylenol, lip balm, sunscreen
4. Map of the Black Hills - great for planning day trips Hills http://www.blackhillsbadlands.com/ho...s/sdbhprintmap
5. Locations of Harley Dealerships along your trip - just in case... http://madmaps.harley-davidson.com/

If you take I-29/I-90, please be advise of strong cross winds and unpredictable weather. Sunny one minute... pouring rain the next.

Rogers cell phone service is non existent in the Dakotas except in major city centers.

The ride over to Spearfish Canyon and Keystone are beautiful. Needles Highway (87) is a must and if you come at it from the west, you'll have a great view of Mount Rushmore as you go through one of the tunnels.

I guess the last thing I would suggest is for you to have a cooler w/ ice & bottled water in one of the bikes. Nice to have throughout the day especially while riding the Hills.

Have a great trip!!!

Dropping down to I-29 then west on I-90 is the quickest route. Little need for much other than your necessities. Do check with the others on what they are taking. On one trip with my sons we had many duplicate items like tire repair kits, air pumps and Atlas's. Since then we divide up on what we each carry. I do always take a first aid kit and the small tool kit that comes with the Ultra.

This year we went up into Canada at International Falls. We stopped at a town about 150 miles east of Winnipeg. The trip on 1 from there to Sturgis took 20.5 hours and 965 miles. I did not know how much slower travel was in Canada. But it was a very interesting trip.

The will be sufficient stops on I-90 for food and fuel.

Good luck on your adventure and ride safe.

Living in SK, I know MB will be the same, watch for large farm machinery moving slowly with little to no markings. Wish I lived closer sounds like a good ride, I am looking to log some miles next weekend as well. Not sure what I'll do, maybe a couple 400-500km day trips.

That's probably the best answer I've seen to the OP question.

Personally, I carry a pretty minimal set, mainly stuff that I've actually had to use in the past or I can realistically imagine needing and using:
-- a pair of new sparkplugs, gap gage and sparkplug socket (bad gas fouled plugs once)
-- broad flat-tip screwdriver (to remove seat)
-- 10-mm box/open wrench (to tighten battery cables)
-- spare fuses
-- roll of electrical tape
-- a set of Allen wrenches
-- #2 Phillips screwdriver
-- medium-sized locking-jaw pliers
-- medium-sized adjustable wrench

I used to carry more, but honestly my last couple of Harleys have been almost totally trouble-free on the road. But of course, just in case, I also carry a GPS, cellphone, credit card, AAA Premier membership card.
