Hey guys,
for the NOVA crowd..whats a great run to hit skyline? Or is Rt 7 to 9 WVA as good or better?
Skyline is what Rt 66 and the follow Luray signs?
All ideas welcome. Need to take in some runs and enjoy the leaves.
Avoid Skyline Drive on the weekends for the next month, unless you like traffic jams.
340 south from Front Royal is a good ride.
340 north from Berryville through Harpers Ferry. Just before reaching the Potomac, turn right on 671 (Harpers Ferry Road) which intersects 9 near Hillsboro
50 west into West Virginia is another good ride or 50 to Winchester and take 522 towards Berkeley Springs.
33 from Harrisonburg to Seneca Rocks, West Virginia is another good ride.
15 north from Leesburg up to Gettysburg is another good ride.
If you really want to ride Skyline Drive, take 66 west to Gainesville, then 211 through Warrenton and get on Skyline Drive at Thornton Gap (or just continue west on 211 to Luray). The traffic picks up late morning so get to Skyline Drive early.
From Leesburg come south on 15 to 50 west at Gilberts Corner. Stay on 50 through Aldie, Middleburg and Upperville. Just past Upperville, right after the road widens, take a left on 17 south at the traffic light. About 2 miles south take a right turn onto 688, Leeds Manor Rd. (You'll see a sign for Naked Mountain Winery.) 688 is a BEAUTIFUL Virginia Byway. Stay on it until it crosses under I-66, then take a right on 55, John Marshall Highway. Pass through Linden into Front Royal. Take a left on 340 and you are about a 1/2 mile from the Front Royal entrance to Skyline Drive. If you are near Thornton Gap around lunchtime, get off Skyline at 211 and head east toward Sperryville. There are great twisties on 211 and when you get to Sperryville, have BBQ at High on the Hog, the yellow house at the west end of town.
I'm going to be on the southern end of Skyline on Sunday, from Thornton Gap to the southern end and on the Blue Ridge Parkway down to the Wintergreen resort. If you see a purple Harley, wave!
I got a Romney run that goes through Berkeley Springs and you can take 50 to Winchester. Not sure what part of NoVa you're from. 9 is a good ways from Skyline though.
Head west and cruise Rt. 11 down the valley. Plenty of historic areas on that route. It's like cruising I-81 without being on 81. Not to mention it'll get you right past Luray, New Market, and VMI.
