Just bought a 2005 XL883C. Reading thru the Owners Manual it states if HD oil isn't available to use deisel oil!! I have a lot of high quality 20W50 semi synthetic m/cycle oil already in my garage, which was bought for my previous bike - is this suitable or not? Sorry if this is a dumb question!
Your oil will be fine. What Harley is saying is that automotive oil designed for gas engines is not as good for your engine. The modern oil had additives/modifiers to maximize fuel mileage and is not sutable for an air cooled engine. The Diesel oil does not contain these additives and is more suitable to use IN A PINCH.
if the oil that you have is the right viscosity (it is) and motorcycle specific then you can safely use it.

Sorry if this is a dumb question!
Welcome to the forum!
Actually it is not a dumb question, however dont be suprised if someone flames you for starting another oil related thread.
Did you try doing a search??There is also a forum here for oil related questions. There is a ton of info at your reach with the search feature.
Short answer #1 - The oil you have will work fine.
Not quite as short answer #2 - Any 20w-50 oil will be OK. No 20w-50, or 15w-50, or 5w-50 oil has any gas mileage improving additives, friction modifiers, or anything else that would cause a problem in your air-cooled engine. You do not even need to use motorcycle specific oil, just oil of the proper viscosity.
Well, I just noticed you are from over the pond. My remarks in answer #2 about the contents of oil additives may not apply to the standards set in your neck of the world.
