Default WTF is it with V-rods?

Pull into a gas station rest area this morning and there are loads of bikes. I’m like wow, I’ll go and see if I know anyone. Turns out I do, one of them and he introduced me etc and they all go out and check the bike out. Apparently, only one 07 FatBoy has been sold on the islands so far. Anyhow, there’s like 6 or seven of them.

20 mins later 2 guys come in who are riding these V-rod things, and they’re Harleys. These guys are going on some run, whatever and the 2 guys ask ‘em “where you all going?”

Then it starts, I won’t go into any details, but suffice it to say, a couple of the guys were complete w@nkers to these two. BUT, only ‘cuz they were riding these V Harleys. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Didn’t even bother to ask my friend either as he made a wise *** comment too, although he sort of stayed on the side lines.

Anyhow, spoke to a friend later and he just told me that the bike is Japanese looking and is oil cooled instead of air cooled or something. Man, WTF, I couldn’t believe it. Hell, I think the bikes actually looked brilliant. I mean, really nice. .....Hell, looked snazzier than mine, that’s for sure. And wtf is it with some stupid difference in the engine? Or the way it runs, or is cooled?

Man, there are some f’ed up people out there. I can understand that maybe in the UK between different clubs etc, but here there are not that many Harleys man. Like when you see one; you kind of stop and notice. So here you’re really glad to meet someone with one. Like, hey, wow, someone else with a Harley. Great.

Anyhow, anyone else heard of that. I can understand Harley owners taking the mick out of Suzuki or Yamaha owners, or visa versa, but Harley on Harley….. man, takes all types. (unless I’m completely missing something here)

Sounds pretty crazy, shouldn't matter what they ride, same wind! But personally I love the V rod and would love to have one as my second bike.

We get the same guff (some in fun, some just snobbish A-holes) from the air-cooled Porsche guys!!! For some of the same reasons HD went to Porsche engineering on the bikes, Porsche developed thier front-engined water-coolers. Now ALL P-cars are water-cooled, and the V-Dub based (911 and it's many derivities) folks are eating crow as the company is bringing out at least two more model lines that are front engined water-coolers. There's a lot of speculation as to where the company is moving... the two new rear-engined cars (the Boxter and the Cayman) are actually Mid-engined and water-cooled and it could be that the 911 series will follow! Won't they be crying then!!!

It's all good, however... Evolution happens. Respect that which has come before and enjoy that which is coming in the future, be it two or four wheels, air or water-cooled! Perhaps it's the same philosophical dilemma faced by photographers... that between the film-captured image and the digitally captured image! They're all pictures, ain't they???

Jim aka kiltiemon - 1987 944S/2001 Wide Glide - (Oh yeah!!! I'll rag the tail-draggers and their little air-coolers.... SO retro!!! But I readily admit I'd love an old 911 Targa. Someday I may even get my hands on a V-Rod!)

The Vrod is the Harley of the future......soon all HD's will be water cooled. Then they will be easier to tune.
