nine11c2 said it real well. I ride a Heritage Classic Softail. The ride really doesn't compare very well at all to a touring model, but I would much rather ride mine across the country than a Superglide. On the otherhand, the SG would be a blast in the twisties.
It's all a matter of what you want the bike for, and what feel comforable to you. I have Anklyosing Spondylitis (AS). I can not ride any bike with mid controls for more than a few minutes. I also can not ride way stretched out like many of the choppers are. The FLST and the baggers are all I can ride now a days.......
the new super glides with the mid glide forks ride pretty good but the older narrow glide forks are the same as the sportster. the super glide is too heavy a bike for the narrow glide forks. i suspect thats why they went to the mid glide forks. the dyna wide glide has the wide glide forks and they ride very nice. the softail standard, deuce, and night train have the wide glide forks and ride really nice. i sold my super glide because of the sporster forks and went with the softail standard and the difference is night and day. if i was gona go back to a dyna it would be a wide glide. for 2 up riding there is not much room on the dyna for the passenger and the softail has a lot more room. i think on the new dyna they attached the passenger foot pegs to the swing arm and is very bad for a passenger. the older dynas had a bracket attached to the frame for the footpeg. the softail b motor is super smooth and i really like to be able to see objects in my mirrors. my old dyna was a lot of fun in the twistys but my standard is just as nimble. both are really nice harleys.
People will tell you that the Dyna's handle better. I have ridden both and really don't see a difference. It's more about rake and wheelbase. A Wide Glide will handle very much like a Softail or a Deuce. A Dyna like the Superglide, with less rake will handle a bit more nimbly.
If you're looking to choose between the two, both are excellent choices. Pick the one you like the look of, the feel of and if you can, ride it and see if you like the handling..
Well played nine11c2
Great stuff-
This Dyna vs Softail thing pops up so often.... with a few well chosen words you got past all the BS and illustrated what the essential difference is.
