I live where it is usually between 50 and 80 degress, at least in the winter. Is 15w 40 thick enough for the basic engine oil. I never really considered that this bike is only air cooled. Do you guys think that this is enough protection for the engine. No, it is not synthetic oil...
In the winter, you can run that 40 wt no problem. Actually it's better in the winter season due to the cold and it makes for easier starts.
My 03 Softail Service Manual says 10W-40 is okay if your lowest ambient temperature goes below 40°F and it has an EXCELLENT Rating for Cold Weather Starts below 50°F. Page 1-11
I used the 10W40 during the winter in Colorado. Worked like a gem
Because when you have very low temperatures, close to freezing and upper thirties, that 50W flows a bit sluggishly when it's very cold and that could lead to more metal wear. Here on the Central Coast, it's been down in the 20's a couple of times. I want to know my oil is going to flow and not sit in the sump like molasses until it heats up.
In the winter, 10W-40 is fine as you don't have the high daily temperatures. It worked on my E84 Evo without any trouble. I had 90K on that motor when I sold it and it didn't have any noticeable wear in the jugs.
It doesn't flow slow enough where you would be able to tell the difference from 40, if you warm the motor up correctly your not going to have a problem. The reason your jugs didn't show much wear was just as much frequency of changing as viscosity. These discussions can go on forever but the fact of the matter is you can use whatever as long as your changing it on a regular basis and not running it low on oil all the time. Guess how I feel about synthetics?

anubisss...petroleum based oil won't stay in grade & is considered to be obsolete (but you know that). That grade should be fine for the conditions you stated but can't you be persuaded to at least go with a part synthetic?.
