I'm in Virginia also.

Gets under 40, I wear heated gloves only with a couple of layers of fleece under leather jacket and some chaps. Anything over like 75 miles, the thermal underwear goes on.

You want to keep the heated gear clost to your body, but usually not in direct contact. Put on a t shirt then the heated vest. Then layer on top of that to insulate the heat.

Friday it was 37 or so when I left home for work(23 miles). Gerbings jacket liner and gloves with dual controller, Full face, long johns and some funky fur lined half chaps. Feet got a little chilly.
If I'd have been headed for Tn (800 miles), I would have added the heated bibs and socks too.

Everybody to their own thing but I don't like being cold. I also don't like feeling like Ralphie's little brother.

Gerbings jacket liner, pants liners and gloves then Tourmaster jacket and riding pants over them. My commute is from 35-45 minutes.

It takes the truck 10-15 minutes to warm up driving and no amount of idling in front of the house helps. With the heated gear I go out warm and stay warm all the way to work. On the weekends I can go out and ride from dawn to dusk and be comfortable the entire time. No stopping to add or remove layers.

I spent enough time in my life being uncomfortable for the army. I don't need to do it for fun now.

I'll brave 45 in the AM if it's sunny and warm in the PM, but that's about it.

I have two pairs (Dickies and Carhartt) of lined/insulated bib overalls. By varying what I wear on top, I can ride comfortably (toasty warm) into the low 30's. No more chaps. The overalls were the best piece of riding gear I've gotten in years.
