Default clutch question

Have an 05 fatboy with 45k on it, ( not riding it much since I got the bagger ) the clutch is adjusted right. The clutch doesn't engage until the lever is almost all the way out. I am thinking ( yes thats where the smokes coming from ) the plates are do for new ones. Am I over looking something?

Is it adjusted right in the basket or adjusted right in the cable? Sounds like it needs an adjustment in your primary

Adjustment than replacement if it is still slipping.

Do a complete adjustment, clutch pack and the cable on a cold engine. No heat in the drivetrain. I have 44k on my 02 Dyna clutch with no problems.

clutch may be adjusted right , but what about the cable ?? you can put that friction zone anywhere you want with the cable adjuster. unless you have really been helling on the clutch , it shouldnt be even close to having to replace

I know you said your clutch is adjusted right, but like others have said, put a lot of slack in your cable first and then adjust the basket on a cold engine. Seat the screw then back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn and tighten the lock nut. Then adjust the cable to take the slack back out. If you do that you should feel it engaging with the lever about an inch off the bar. Even if the disks are worn you'll feel it engaging. If it slips or loses engagement when you accelerate, that tells you your clutch plates are shot.

The friction zone is based on the clutch basket adjustment. If it starts to engage too late, the clutch pack is too loose. That's what happens when all your clutch adjustments are made at the cable, or the clutch pack is adjusted without first putting slack in at the cable. Cable adjustment sets the lever position, clutch basket adjustment sets the friction zone engagement point.

THe clutch is not slipping. I'll do another adjustment on the clutch pack and cable. I only have 1/8" play in the cable. If I put more play in the cable I can get the friction zone where I like it. But the lever gets kinda sloppy to much freeplay.
