Default I'm gonna get crucified for asking this, but....

Does anyone on here have or know anything about the motorcycle lifts that raise and carry your bike sideways on the rear of your vehicle. I'm planning a trip out west with the family and thought it would be a neat idea to ride portions of the old route 66 along the way. A few hours here and there whenever I get the urge. Please nobody ask why I don't just take the time and ride it all by myself on the bike, etc, etc. It's just not an option. Those with families will understand. I'm hoping someone can guide me on the purchase of one of these. I hate the thought of pulling a trailer, I'm thinking fuel economy is much better with one of these, as well as convenience? Also, any suggestions on what portions of the route are a must-ride, diners, etc.? I'd be picking up 66 probably south of Chicago all the way to Albequrque, New Mexico. Thanks fellas

I don't think I would tailgate the weight of a Harley across the country. A trailer would be my choice.

Or any other method besides trailering (HogHauler) that anyone ever uses?

You ride the bike and make the mrs and kid take the car! Been there done that. Made a trip to Montana and rode the bike and wife and kid took the car. We met up at vistas and gas stops.

I have used those for dirt bikes but have never seen them for harleys. I would also be concerned with the weight. Even when I carried the dirt bikes I was always worried about some idiot rear ending me...what could be a dent on the bumper or trailer could be thousands in damage to the bike. I would use a trailer.

The weight might lift your front wheels off the ground or make the steering dangerous. Either use a work van or a covered trailer.

I looked at them a long time ago and went with a Kendon dual rail trailer. If I remember correctly, most of them will not hold a Harley and the ones that did a trailer was cheaper.

700+ pounds hanging at the furthest end of a intermediate range touring vehicle (family POV/SUV) doesn't sound like a good idea. I think you'd be way outside the manufacturer's recommended cargo weight/distribution ("Weight and Balance").

I would look at borrowing or renting a trailer.

Family vacation - ride in the car with the wife and kids. Be pleasant and make lots of comments on how nice some of these roads would be to take the bike on. After the family vacation, drop off the family and hop on the bike and go solo back to the places you want to ride in. It's tough to mix a family vacation and a riding vacation all into one trip. If time off work is the problem, either trailer the bike, or leave the bike trip for another time. I would not recommend putting a Harley on the rear bumper of the car.
