can u guys school me on power harley with cam do u need power commanders?
Im helping a friend with his bike Im a carb guy and i have no idea about efi.. he has a used 2006 roadking and just found out it has 204 cams and pipes and s/e air fliter. we took the side cover off and i see a black box with ribs on it with a gray plug. my dads bike has the same thing so I guess its stock. this is where a power commander would go right??? why does this bike with a cam not have a power commander?? and if we add one will that do anything for power? can u just buy one and add it or harley has to tune it? thanks
On my Deuce the Power Commander is under the seat. Not sure where it would mount on the RK. But it doesn't replace the stock ECM, it piggybacks on it. Meaning that you plug it in to the ECM and it takes the ECM output and changes it based on whatever map (tuning) the PC has in it.
You can go on the DynoJet website and search their database for a map for the bike. They may have one that is for your/his setup. Keep in mind that every bike is different and a map is only as good as the tune you put on the bike after you load the map. http://www.powercommander.com/powerc...r/Default.aspx
You're not that faraway if you want to have a good tuner who is experienced with PC's tune it. As I recall it cost me around $300 when he did mine.
Ask for Mike or Sean (Shawn) at JDS Cycle in Roselle Park (exit 135), tell them Deucedog sent ya. http://www.jdscycle.com/
My bike is stock, with the exception of a Propipe and SE air cleaner and it runs MUCH better after having it tuned properly.
Trust me on this one. There are some "generic maps" on the PC, but a custom DYNO tune is hard to beat. That is where the tech puts it on a dyno machine and adjust the fuel/air/timing at all RPM ranges to get the peak performance at 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 etc.....range so that your engine is performing its best all the time. A generic map figures in what cam, exhaust, air filter you have and give you a ballpark configuration for your fuel injection.
PS-- the PC can be located anywhere on the bike where there is room. Many times it is under the seat.
If you really want to go one step closer pick up the auto tune. There you plug in an O2 sensor, ride a little bit, than plug your computer in and it will redraw up a map. To be honest for your app a generic map is gonna work unless your racing or something like that the dyno tune or auto tune is the better route.
