Default Brake Light Switch Replacement with Internaly Wired Bars

A few days ago I posted a thread about my turn signals, horn, and brake light not workingl. The brake light switch inside the hand control went bad and literally fell apart in my hand as I removed it. Now to the question.

I dread the thought of having to run the 2 wires through the bars but a friend suggested I cut off the old switch, solder the wire from the new switch to the just cut on the old wires and pull it through that way. I could do this without removing the bars or pulling out all the wires. Then I had a thought: What if I just cut the switch off the old wires, cut the wires on the new switch a few inches from it and just solder that to the piece of wire already sticking out of the bars?

I'm concerned that the vibration might wear the wire through the heat-shrink tubing Though and would eventually need to replace it again.

Should I just run the new switch wire through the bar or will I be ok by soldering the new to the old without worrying about the wire rubbing through at some point?

That's what I would do...if you do it right, you will have no problem

i did this about six months ago. i found a switch brand new on ebay for $15. the dealership wanted $65. cut the old switch off inside the control housing and soldered the new one on. covered with heat shrink and a few extra layers of electrical tape for good measure. if it does rub through you can re-solder if you leave yourself a bit of extra wire. You wouldn't need to replace the switch. But i doubt you'll have a problem.

I think either way will work fine as long as you use a good solder connection and shring tubing. Might have some difficulty pulling the wires thru the bars depending on how much room you have and how the bars are bent.

Take a look at one of my threads on Solder connections, might help.
