Yeah, that's what I tell my wife's grandmother, but for an 80+ year-old retired school teacher in a small town, she's managed to need to fire hers at people twice.

Just in my family, seems like most of us have been shot, shot at or shot other people. Not sure where you live that you think a gun is an ego prop, but many thousands of people die and get seriously hurt in this country every year that could have avoided it if they had one. I've never in my life needed a fire extingusher, but I don't consider it an "ego prop" to have one.

Chaps keep your legs warm and vests keep your core warm - if you've been wearing chaps because your *** gets cold and a vest for your arms, you've been doing it wrong. Luckily, I grew up in the 70's and 80's when vests were a popular substitute for winter jackets, so I already knew that.

Well Put....I live in the southwest. There are a lot of holes in the desert. I'm not going to be put in one. Lotta crazy, wacked out meth heads, dope addicts. I'll keep my vest and my 40. I'm one of the good guys. keep your nose to yourself and you'll never know I have it.

I agree with the posts of warrconn and onaride63.

However, TwiZted Biker does make a good point - as long as things go smoothly. Have a flat tire or a break down in a questionable or secluded area (lots of secluded areas here) especially if you're riding alone, which I do quite a bit now, and you become even more vulnerable than a normal motorcyclist already is. When you become vulnerable, odds increase greatly that you'll become a victim of a crime. There are just too many people out there now that are doing things that defy logic.

A vest and a flannel shirt is perfect in NorCal in the spring and late autumn. I don't need anything stuck on it. As far as carrying, I keep the 40 in one saddlebag and two loaded magazines in the other. Don't have a CCW and I sure don't want the felony conviction that comes with illegal carry. Only time I would need a gatt is if I broke down in the middle of nowhere. One time it could come in handy...

It's only a misdemeanor unless you are a convicted felon in Cali. If they ever as to search you say no. Unless they have PC they will let you go. BTW, I had a guy pull a knife on me last year in a shady part of town. When I pulled the Glock he hauled ***. You never know...

Thanks RN. They seems to be more uptight here in Sacto... I carry when I walk the dog in the park at 3:45am, especially on trash days when the bums come to loot the recycle cans...

My prez liked the idea of sewing it to my flesh but lucky me I talked him out of it!

Guys 99% of this place would never be in a questionable place ever so the guns a mote point , people carry because it's a false sense of security .

I have been shot at , been hit twice . I also know if & when it gets real most choke gun or no and when they find that gun on you after choking if your very lucky they just take it , if not it gets used on you . Bad juju ............

Not a gun forum lets leave them outa here what says kids ?

Soon as I hit 21 I'll have a gun on me for just about every ride. Both of my parents were shot in a robbery when I was 1 (thank God both made it through fine), and since then we've been robbed multiple times. Once, a few years ago, I had someone trying to bust the front door open till I tapped on the glass with one of the old man's Glocks. My point is, we seem to have bad luck in family too, and we live in a bad area (murders and break-ins all over the place) so it's not a tough guy thing or an ego boost...it's a life saver. We also had the feds come take some guy down in our front lawn a few years back. And the way Orlando's going.....it's definitely not a bad idea to carry around there either. If you drive a big tough truck and never touch dirt or haul anything worth talking about, you're driving one pretty damn expensive ego trip. Same with carrying just to feel cool or tough. Don't be so quick to generalize those kinds of things if you haven't lived it or don't live it every day.

As for vests, only if I need the pockets and a little wind protection on a hot day. Either way, I'm not going short sleeves on a bike.

Also, I would only feel safe carrying because I've grown up shooing. Same as a bike, I don't think either should be handled without training, confidence, and responsibility. Just common sense there folks.

Getting back on topic, what do you guys who don't like vests wear instead? Is it either full jacket or shirt, no middle ground?

Yeah, I guess one to look at it is that the military has a very specific take on visibility. That is: don't get seen when you could be shot. Try like hell to be seen when you could get ran over.

Either way, at least they are consistent that it is a safety concern (albeit an arguably misguided one on the bike.) Myself, I am fine with it. I was never too good at being cool anyway.
