I still get a touch upset if I or the wife drags our feet across the bags. But I broke mine in early. One week exactly after buying it, I was on my way to the dealer so they could install the bars, backrest, and luggage rack that I got in the deal. Only after I arrived did I notice that I hadn't latched one of the bag lids good enough. The entire way there it was laid open and banging up and down. After debating on going to the hospital or not, I got most of the marks off, but not all of them. Ever since, it just hasn't been that important any more as long as it starts and runs!
I used to ride with a guy, ratty old dude who just bought a brand new superglide.
He used a nasty old chain to lock up his bike when he was not with it, but what
shocked me was he just wrapped that old crusty chain around the sissy bar, resting right
on the rear fender!! I was WTF are you doing, he said, it will "give it some character"
Withing a week all the paint was gone under the chain, backrest pad ripped up, and everything
had started to rust up pretty good. He just says, now it looks better....
must be an old timer thing.
I've not been that way with either one of mine. I had over 30K mi. on my '07 Sportster when I traded it in for my '12 Fat Bob. If you don't want any scratches, swirls, bird crap, bugs or water spots on it, leave it on the showroom floor. Or................you can just ride the Hell out of it and enjoy the ride. That's what motorcycling is about or hadn't you heard?
Bought both bikes use, but still am **** - probably most about the tin. I also learned how not to polish out chrome scratches, don't ask me how, I just know.
