Going to Sturgis in August with a group of work buddies. What are some do's and do nots so as not to look like a total nerd? I'm male, 54. Places to go and have fun and places to definitely avoid trouble. Can one find alady passenger there or shopuld he try to find one before getting there?
Sturgis has something for everyone. Check out the websites to see what you want to experience. If you are going to stay in a motel, book them ASAP, they go fast and are expensive. There are lots of campsites where you can camp. Some have concerts and our party campsites, others are more quiet. There is no place you can't go, people are there to have a good time and nobody will bother you if you don't start something. I find that most ladies ride with someone and don't come alone. The males to female ratio is very high.If you are looking for a riding partner, might consider bringing one with you. Sturgis is a great experience and you can find whatever you are looking for during the week. Read the websites and have fun.
Check out Buffalochip.com, I've stayed there the last 2 yrs. in the Fenske park area. Camp or rent a camper on site or bring your own. Check out their msg board too.
Group of 4 looking for a place to stay pre-rally week, prefer in or near deadwood. We are a peacful lot. anybody got any suggestions, let me know. thanks, riverman
Avoid trouble? The later it gets the more the crazies are out. I liked riding early then parking the bike at night. Be sure to pack for cool weather, rain and HOT weather. When riding in to Custer State Park, watch out for the first curve, it was posted at 35 but should have been more like 15! When riding Needles Hwy, be prepared for stop and go as Tour Busses try to get through tunnels. When visiting Custer, Sturgis, Deadwood, etc., go early to get a good spot to park the bike! There will be lots of folks out there!!! For me, it was good to get good rest as we rode all the way there and back. It would have been painful with little sleep! But then I wanted to be my best to avoid the masses!!! Will be riding up again with the wife this time!
Might be good to check out the rental houses for the week, google Sturgis rentals.

Make sure you check out the Full Throttle Saloon. It was a blast. Also be sure to get over to Deadwood and Lead. Both were lots of fun. Good advice earlier to get there early if you want to park centrally. Huge event set-up at the Rapid City HD dealer. Crazy Horse is pretty cool, so is Rushmore. Last year we left on Tuesday and went to Devil's Tower on the way home. The little town of Hulet (sp?) was packed early that afternoon, not sure if it's always like that, or if it was a Tuesday thing. Looked fun, but we had to press on in order to make Cody that night. To make it simple: DO - plan on everywhere being crowded. DON'T skip anything you want to see, never know when you'll make it back. Have a blast.
And take a lot of money. Prices on everything is jacked up. Damn near crapped all over myself whenthe cheapest item on the menu at the Mangy Moose was a burrito for $8. Tons of venders there too, so have some extra room to hauleverything home
Gotta check out Full Throttle Saloon at night, gotto the Buffalo Chip campground and cathc the dusk parade, unless your not fondof strange oddeties and nudity. Gotta ride the needles highway, Leave early in the morning, the earlier the better, If you miss the needles your MISSIN OUT. Bring cloths for temps from freezing to hotter that h%$#. Check outDeadwood, gotto The the Thin Lizzy's in deadwood for a cheap good breakfast. GEEZZZZZZZ I could go on and on......Ride Spearfish Canyon. And most of all ENJOY THE RIDE and be yourself. I always remember one thing, RESPECT for your fellow biker.
