Default Riding and hiring in Sydney, Australia

I am due to visit Sydney next week and staying for 3 weeks on a work project. However I do expect some spare time and was thinking about hiring a Harley for a few days and getting out and seeing some of the country.

Can anybody suggest where to go, and places to visit, places to meet other bikers etc

Last time i was at home I heard none of the HD dealers in Sydney did hires anymore. Perhaps one of the other Aussies can chime in here to confirm and maybe provide alternatives.

As far as places to visit go, wow, how much time have you got and how big a list do you want

Quick and easy day tours ( assuming you're on a bike)

Head west up into the blue mountains. Plenty to see in around there and loads of great hikes to do if you are into that.

Head north west up into the hunter valley if you like touring vineyards and wine tasting, on second thought better make that a weekend trip, plenty of b&b type places to stay at.

Head north up the coast, cruise around the Hawksberry river area, some very scenic riding to be had. Same goes if you head south down through the national park.

For a (perhaps a long) weekend away you could Head as far north as Coffs Harbour, say hi to my Mum when you get there

Even if you don't have a bike there, it's probably worth hiring a car to go on trips anyway.

In Sydney, some cool places to visit:

The rocks, lots of good restaurant and great pubs

Deux Ex Machina, these guys build some very cool and funky custom bikes.

Paddys market in hay market next to china town, every bit of crap under the sun can be bought there.

If you like your seafood, you have to visits Doyle's restaurant in watsons bay.
If you like your seafood literally straight off the boat, go visit the fishermans co-op. there's a bunch of little eateries in there that take the fish straight from the boat to the pan.

For a wild night out, just head up to kings cross.

And of course, you can't visit Sydney without having a pie 'n' peas or a pie floater from Harry's cafe de wheels, try to go to the original one at Wooloomooloo, and try pronouncing Wooloomooloo when you are drunk.

And of course the beaches. Be aware though, it's starting to cool down in Sydney, western area and mountains can be downright cold this time of year.

I am sure the other Aussies will chime in with some cool places to visit. These are just the first things in my head after being away for 11 years.

Either way I can't see you not having a good time there regardless of what you do

The beauty of Sydney is that you can go anywhere without a car. The trains, subway, bus and ferry lines go everywhere you need to get to. I love the Darling Harbour area, it's full of restaurants and some night spots. For a wilder time you can't beat King's Cross. For a bit of adventure you can climb the Harbour Bridge, but be aware that it's about 3 hours and probably close to $200 US. The payoff is one of the most incredible views possible of Sydney and the fantastic harbour. Circular Quay is the transportation hub and also features a number of great restuarants and clubs. In two trips I've spent two full weeks in Sydney and I still want more. The beer is the best I've ever had and the wines are excellent as well. If you can rent a bike, heading west into the Blue Mountains is a great ride as well as heading south and north. Since you're from the UK you'll be right at home driving on the left side of the road.

Make sure that you go to a local takeaway shop and get a Burger With The Lot and some chips with chicken salt. Wash it down with some Victoria Bitter or if you like the dark stuff get some Toohey's Old Black Ale, my favorite.

Wish I could join you.

Can't help you with hiring advise, dont know who does it. I live just south of Sydney so I don't know much about riding north of Sydney (eg Hunter Valley) but I do recommend The Blue Mountains to the west and places south like The Southern Highlands, Kangaroo Valley and South Coast. There is a road between The Southern Highlands and South Coast called Macquarie Pass, it's very similar to The Dragon (or whatever it's called lol) in the US

I might even see you out on the road

This is my bike in the Southern Highlands a couple weeks ago

I rode down the mountain to the ocean & took this at a town called Kiama

Decided to go back last Friday and take some pics with my bike and my uncles bike (he only lives 10 mins from Kiama)
