Are you planning on riding in Canada with a skid lid, or novelty? It's like riding without tail lights, if a cop sees it you'll get a ticket. They may not let you proceed without a dot helmet, in which case they will provide the courtesy of calling a tow truck an impounding your vehicle. Choice is yours, you'll be rolling the dice.
I doubt they care at the border, however showing up with a clear infraction on your vehicle says something about the rider. You may be setting yourself up for a level two inspection.
The wife & I crossed the border into Canada 3 times in the last month in route to Alaska & back. They never checked our helmets. They only asked if we had any firearms, cash over 10,000 dollars & if we had purchased anything while in Canada. We crossed into BC all three times.
Canadians along the Quebec & Ontario / NY border couldn't be friendlier. Their concerns focus on where are you going & how long will you be staying. They appear to work for the Chamber of Commerce.
Coming home is a different matter. After the border delay, there is a belt of customs officers, homeland security, & state police that progressively thin out approximately 90 miles south.
Border guards do not care about such things, it's not in their mandate, they are border officials, not traffic cops.
Now once you get across the popo do have it in their mandate to care, and they do. You get caught with a joke helmet you will be parked until you get a real one, and pay the fine off as well.
They just started enforcing the skidlid and beanies here in BC as of June.
I haven't heard about anybody getin busted yet but the cops are aware of non DOT approved headgear.
I assume its to the cops discretion in the helmet sizing but it being non DOT approved your guaranteed to park the bike till a proper helmet is worn and be relieved of a bunch of bucks in fines.
Never heard of someone being stopped but they will set up check point on the odd Saturday night and look for infraction on any motor vehicle...got to ask yourself...do you feel lucky
