Default Riding Jackets

Did a search and couldn’t find much. My question is when it comes to riding jackets which material is better? pro’s and cons etc? I know a lot of people wear leather but what about the other materials used?

In TX you're probably best with mesh + some padding/protection. No need for the metric road racing armor...just something to keep from peeling skin off if (God forbid) you hit the tar. I've seen some good deals on Motorcycle Superstore lately - might be worth a looksee. Good luck!

Well I used to wear a leather jacket with mesh leather gloves on my metric, but any time I got stuck in traffic it would get super hot during the summer, even with the winter liner out and vents opened up on it. I would say go for whatever you feel comfortable in. Depends on what part of TX you are in too for what you should probably get.

Define your needs in a riding jacket- that determines composition and weight.

I have moto friends that swear by their mesh jackets.

I like denim or denim like material.

Then there's cotton/nylon..

I have two textile or mesh jackets. One has armor and vents. The other does not and both have zip out linings. I have a H-D leather jacket. I like them all and it depends on how I feel. As to which one I wear. I think all will protect me if needed.

I have a leather jacket for when it is cooler weather and I have seen how leather protects riders from road rash. I was looking for something for warmer days that is abrasion resistant or at least sturdy enough to protect from road rash if something was to happen. So I was looking for opinions about other materials like mesh, denim, textile etc. and what some people use and why. I’m a DD. If I have to go some where solo it’s on a bike.

I have leather but for long hauls I wear a FirstGear Textile jacket, it has vents, as waterproof as my rain suit, lots of pockets, lighter, drys out quicker; I love the look of leather but I find textile to be more versatile. Leather gets hotter, is heavier, not as waterproof and a lot more money if you want the standard features of most textile jackets. I wore leather only for almost 30 years before switching. I only care about what works best now not what looks best when touring. Shorter rides I still wear my leather because I like the feel and yes I like the looks but only short rides not multi day rides or if there is a lot of temperature variations.

This is my preferred long distance jacket, I have an older version

I have a Nitro mesh jacket with armor for hot weather and a leather jacket for cold.

Summer of 2010 hit the asphalt at 70 mph and slid a couple hundred feet on my back and elbows. The Nitro mesh I was wearing saved my bacon big time. In a couple of spots on the elbows the mesh barely wore thru to the armor inserts...did not take anything off the inserts. No road rash.

When looking at mesh, there are different types, some melt/wear faster than others.

The Nitro I have is 100% polyester 150D abrasion resistant mesh.

Check out the Tourmaster Air Intake II. Mesh with removable quilted and waterproof liner. Has removable armor panels that are not intrusive. With the liners it's good down to mid 30's, without, reasonably comfortable while moving when it's hot as it does a lot in south AL. When stopped it will be hot so don't stop.

I have the HD FXRG that I use when it's cooler so the TM doesn't get as much cool weather use.
