Looks like instead of the others stepping up with R&D NHRA is satisfied with making rules to satisfy the slowest guys. I think they should have started with just 5 more pound on top of the 5 they added earlier in the year. So now they go into the final points races with the screaming eagle guys scrambling to find a new set up that works with the extra weight. What happened to the days where innovation could win races.
"NHRA has announced changes to the Pro Stock Motorcycle category. For 2013, Harley-Davidson and Buell will both be allowed a maximum 160-cubic-inch displacement (cid) for a 60-degree, two-valve, pushrod engine. Minimum weight for both motorcycles will be set at 625 pounds. The four-valve Harley-Davidson engine combination will no longer be allowed. Suzuki will still have a maximum of 107 cid for a two-valve engine. Minimum weight on the Suzuki will be 595 pounds. NHRA also will discontinue the four-valve option on the Suzuki motorcycle.
In the interim, NHRA announced a minimum weight increase of 10 pounds for Harley-Davidson competitors in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class. The change will be in effect at this weekends 27th annual AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex in Dallas. The new minimum weight for Harley-Davidson motorcycles will be 670 pounds."
I do not like that they did it now, but you have to admit that watching PS bike lately has been a snoozer.
If HD ran away with every race this season then there would be no PS bike next year, because everyone else has been fuming about "the unfair advantage" that the HD bikes have.
It would be different if anyone could buy a v-rod setup, and run it.
They finally did something about V&H running (ruining) the show with the rules and Harley catering to them only. Suzuki got their 4-valve deal yanked also.
I'm not all that familiar with the way things are set up but if they're changing the rules to let the rest of the bikes have a better chance of beating the HD's that sounds like a crock. Suzuki makes a V-twin, stick it out there and try to beat the HD's with it.

The big problem is that the Harley bikes run a one off V-rod motor, with overhead cams, and 4 valve, it wouldn't be a big deal if anyone could buy the motor , but no other team can even buy it, or run it.
ANY other bike in the category has to make their engines ,and parts available to everyone as per NHRA rules, but HD doesn't have to do this, because they are grandfathered in.
Seems like they are adjusting the rules to level the playing field. Been that way for a long time. Makes the races more interesting for the spectators.
the v-rod will still be the cream of the crop. they(vance & hines) are re-engineering the engine and dropping the overhead cams down a little into the motor---to comply with having push rods like every one else. however, they will be little short push rods--nothing like what every one else will be running.
harley spends a few million bucks to be the official motorcycle of the n.h.r.a.. rest assured that the rules will give them an advantage.
the other team to watch will be the buells of the aranas. geico is dropping their sponsorship of karen stoffer and that money will be going to the lucas oil people. they already have the lucas/geico top fuel car--now they will have some more bucks to spend on the buells!
n.h.r.a. waved the rule that required a certain number of the bike being raced be available to the general public for the moco on the v-rods. nobody else is allowed to buy or race the v-rod.
remember when honda decided to go dirt-track racing--they put bubba shobert and ricky graham on honda twin 750's and they kicked harley's(XR750) *** on the mile and half mile. it did not result in more sales and honda quit racing and put their money into other projects. now the AMA has all types of bikes running in their dirt program. hell, i remember a ducatti winning a mile in prescott a couple of years ago. n.h.r.a. could do the same if they cared about giving the public a good show.
the n.h.r.a. has always been controlled by a few big spenders. john force, don schumacher, lucas oil, and harley will dictate what happens.
it may take vance & hines a while to get up to speed--but they will continue to dominate and the rules will be tweaked as needed by the n.h.r.a..
meh, i quit watching NHRA when they cut the track to 1000'.
I still like it, they raced to 1000 feet before, and just held on squishing down in the seat when they went 1/4 mile , I say what is 320 feet anyway.
They are pulling 320 mph, and 3.70s in 1000 feet.
Vance and Hines is the cream of the crop, big money and lots of experience is why they win, they won with Suzuki's, now Harley's and they could probably make a Vespa win if they wanted.
Not much stock on any of these bikes, deep pockets and lots of skill make these bikes go fast, just like the 4 wheel racers.
