I have been looking for a tool to plan out trips, hotels, campsites, points of interest, etc. I know a lot of you would just say go left, right, north, south, etc. For some people that may work, but for some of us we need to have a little guide line to start. I'm not saying you can't change as you ride, just a start.
Anyways, I found a website called myscenicdrives.com. I'm curious if anyone has every used it. It seems to be pretty cool. It doesn't cost anything to join. And it does not compete with this forum. Here is a link. Check it out if you want. I'm not trying to promote anything. Just found it and thought others might like it.
I use the one at http://www.harley-davidson.com you just have to create a sign-on and the launcher is on the "My Profile" page. It takes a little getting used to, but is very versatile and also shows the "Best Western" hotels in the area.
Something like the Roadside America app that can tell you what there is for close by attractions by using the phones GPS. Still has the "just drive road trip" concept but a tool to find near by attractions for where ever you may be.
Google maps for the iPhone with voice turn by turn was released last week. So far, I like it. But, I can't seem to get the custom maps I make in the desktop version of Google maps to transfer to my iPhone. I like to start with two points and then drag the route to make changes and also add destinations. Is there a desktop app that allows this kind of planning that will transfer properly to either a smart phone or a Garmin GPS? I don't want the unit to tell me what the fastest/shortest rote is. I want it to tell me, turn by turn, the route that I planned myself. Seems simple enough, but it's incredibly hard to find a package that'll do it.

Good luck!
This one is probably the best one for your needs. I've used it to set up a trip, but whenever I get out, I tend to freelance somewhat and snoop places. So, I never seem to follow the route as planned.
The one you mentioned, (myscenicdrives) is incomplete, doesn't show all the states.
The AMA has a similar website to this. These are good for finding great places to ride in a new area. For actual ride planning, the HD ride planned is hard to beat.
This one seems to be ok, at least for California. The HD Ride Planner is good, but maybe I need to work with it more, I find it doubling back on my routes. What I use is Microsoft Street and Trail then I import my route into my Garmin. I bought the program off Amazon for around $21.00. For my smart phone I use an app called greatest rides, it lets you know a little about what's out there then you can plan around that. I recently found another program that's geared for motorcycle rides. I'll post that link when I can get to my other computer.

I use Tyre because it allows me to create back road routes and uploads to my Garmin. The HD Road planner saves well when major roads are selected but does not save my back roads routes with multiple waypoints.
