Default extended service plan...

I just bought a new HD Ultra this week and I had a question. Do you guys recommend the extended warranty plan? I ride roughly 8000 to 10,000 miles per year on my current bike. Is the warranty that comes with the bike sufficient? Thanks.

There are several schools of thought on Extended Service Plans. These are not warrenties, but for all intended purposes, they serve the need. If you plan to put a lot of miles on your ride the probability of some type of failure goes way up. Obviously the opposite is true if you want a garage queen.

Ask yourself, am I able to make and afford any repair needed myself? If the answer is no, ESP is something to consider. It's peace of mind knowing that is something comes apart in the engine, and you are in the middle of nowhere, you are covered. I know a person that this happened to. His two nights in a hotel, meals, and all work done to REPLACE the engine, $50 deductable that was it. Sure he had to turn in his reciepts for meals and the hotel, but was worth it.

Another way to look at the ESP, is it protects your investment. When I traded my 09 FLHTCU, the dealer service department came out with a laundry list of possible thing's that needed attention if I was to trade. If I had the ESP I could have said then fix them and give me a better value for my trade. Also if something is questionable when you have your bike serviced, they are more likely to err on the side of replacing something.

Guys worry about making modifications. There are plenty of modifications can be made that won't effect anything. Plus the mod would have to be the cause of the issue. If you make radical changes then don't bother. So anything that can affect the reliability of your bike to perform as it was intended. Mufflers, headers, air cleaner, and tuning done properly only make your bike perform better and more reliable.

There are dealers that will sell you this plan over the phone at a great rate. Your dealers price is flexable, I let mine match the best price I could find.

I normally never get them but with labor on Harley's being $1,000 an hour, yeah, I got one for my bike. Plus, I live 75 miles away and they'll come and get it.

I didn't go to the thread linked in an earlier post, so maybe you found what you wanted. I bought an extra 5 years (7 years total) for peace of mind. The upfront cost was reasonable and I'm assured all I pay for is maintenance and wear items for 7 full years. I don't wrench, so it's a good fit for me. Some may tell you save the money and wrench yourself.

Because some things, like wheels and tires, will be covered under the ESP now, but not the factory warranty.

OP, if you plan to ride a lot (more than 10k a year), I say get the ESP. I've had my bike 20 months, and have 25k miles on it. I have the ESP, and I've used it to get a new rear tire already, which didn't cost me a thing (no deductible for tire/wheel coverage).

I think you need to read your contract. The 5 year extended warranty runs concurrently with your factory warranty. So you have 3 years of coverage after your factory warranty expires.
