I have a 2011 RGU. I've ridden it through summer heat before with no problem, and it's got 45, 000 miles on it. A couple of days ago, I somehow got a big 1" blister on my right inside ankle bone. I thought it was maybe from boots (I recently rototilled the garden area), but my wife thinks it's a burn blister. She asked about the exhaust on the bike (she's ridden on the back on a few trips and knows there's heat there), but there are no marks on my boots and I've never had a problem before.
Coincidently, I already had an appointment with my Dermatologist (melanoma is the main reason I'm going), and since I'm already going I'll have her look at this blister, too.
Has anybody actually been burnt by these damn catalytic converters yet ? I'd already planned to replace the head pipes soon, but we have a trip to Yosemite in a couple of weeks and I wanted to wait until after we got back to do that. I still haven't even figured out what route to go with the exhaust and the tune.
So, has anybody actually been burned just from riding ?
Yep!
You need to get ride of the catalytic conveter.
Simplest method is a new header pipe, OR a complete set of true duals.
Either will eliminate a lot of heat due to the converter and I believe will lenghten the life of your engine.
I don't mean to be a wise guy but at least over the ankle boots is a good idea. First to the reason you just mention but if you just have a fall-over you might avoid a broke ankle; heaven forbid a worse crash.
Man have you ever had a decent burn ? You'd know immediately the moment you did it if that's what it was on your ankle trust me . Sounds like the footwear was rubbing you wrong or **** poor white tube socks were involved .
Oh, yeah, I've always got a pair of over-the-ankle boots on when I'm on the bike. They're at least 8" high. I even have an old pair of crash-tested boots, they were with me when I rode my '06 for the last time. That's why I have a newer bike with the lovely catalytic converter. I'm still trying to figure out which head-pipes to go with, and the plan was to change them in about a month. This Yosemite trip just became available though. The cat is definitely coming out before it gets hot this summer. Thanks.
I'm just wondering if anybody has been physically injured by the cat. I know the brake-light switches were. What about the riders ?

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. A burn that size would've hurt like hell. But my wife was wondering about the exhaust so I thought I'd ask.
If anybody ELSE had been burnt like that, it would sure make it easier for me to justify new pipes, if you know what I mean.....
