Default Looking for advice, need help

I'm buying either one if two bikes this week.

First, check it out
http://stcloud.craigslist.org/mcy/3688437961.html
Higher miles, lots of engine mods, is this good or bad?

Maintenance, and if the bike has problems, I have no idea?

Second bike,

Same model same year, 18,000 miles, a few thousand in exhaust, stage one, chrome fork, engine stock.
This one is a friend from work, no pics but looks mint, still has 2 yrs extended warranty, all maintenance done at Harley. Asking $15,500, won't bargain on price.

Do I take the higher mileage bike with lots of power and engine mods? Or the stock bike, with good maintenance history ?

Personally I would say non of the above.I bought a 2008 with 7000 miles from a bank to resell. It had been stripped of the bags and the wheels and exhaust. but still had a chromed out gauge trim and some taller bars.I brought it home and found a set of black bags so no repaint for 225$ from a guy who put bad dad bags on .The exhaust was bought off of craigslist when everyone decided this particular setup didnt dyno all that well. The wheels were stockers and I had to change bearings. So that was $75 plus 200$ for the wheels.I was in at $11000 total.I decided I wanted a different color and worked my a$$ off to get 13500$ out of it.I wish now I would of kept it and put $1500 into paint. So basically it was the same as your only with screaming eagle cams and air cleaner.I cant remember whose tuner it had and it just ran okay. But there was allways a unknown with the thing due to its history even though it had a clean title

$4-5K more and you could have a new one...they're asking too much for both bikes...JMO. I'd keep shopping...

Thanks for the replies so far, in my area, on craigslist there are no better deals, only similar prices with similar options

Just my 2cents but I imagine that given the performance mods on the first bike it's probably been ridden pretty hard.

I'd opt for your friend's bike since you know him and the history of the bike. A Harley has plenty of power for every day use. If you think you'd like a bit more punch then you could spend a few bucks to do the upgrades yourself.

Just because you know someone doesn't mean jack. I got taken for 9k from someone I worked with. But the bike does have warranty. If it is as good as he say's it is take it to the dealer for a inspection, make sure the warranty is transferable. I would go for the low milage close to stock bike. Never know about some else's mod and how they where done.

I would stay away from a bike that's had engine work done...probably been road hard and put away wet.

Find a nice stock bike and make it your own.

The miles or price are not much different...

28,936/$15K vs 18,000/$15.5K... Yer only talkin 10 thousand miles, and price wise a difference of 500 bucks?

And I agree, that for just a little more you could get a brand new one! If you're buying off of craigslist, you must have cash on hand. Even if you can't get another few $K together right now, that would be a healthy down payment on new. If you can't find less expensive used on craigslist, try another area further away but still close to you.

I just don't seem to understand your dilemma...

I'd consider your friend's bike. As mentioned, have your local dealer go through it to verify it's condition. You can also handle the entire purchase through them as well.
