I was watching a dealer rep demo the new players on the touring bikes. It really looked nice and offered a lot of features like taking phone calls and such. But while checking it all out the thought that kept crossing my mind as the rep was shifting through ipod menus and folders was about how this might lead to rider distractions. Does anyone else think that perhaps this might lead to potential incidents? Is it really prudent to put such a device on a motorcycle where constant attention to one's surroundings is critical? I know there are joystick controls to select songs/albums from Ipod's and MP3 Players but will riders sometimes be paying more attention to what's playing on the monitor or seeing who that incoming call is from?

There's no doubt there will be riders that will play with their new technology when they should be paying attention. I'm a little surprised, albeit glad the lawyers at Harley let them do it. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their own actions. If Harley wants to continue to attract younger riders they have to move forward. They're masters at hiding technology to keep the classic look. That makes older guys like me happy but doesn't impress the young folks.
The increased crashes will justify air bags. I went to the dealer today, The 2014s are approaching Gold Wing size. Tour Pack is huge, to hide the seat for fat asses.
The person missed the most important feature of the integrated system. The voice activated feature. The voice activated control is the most advanced ever. All of the devices can be activated by voice command. Even text messages. The Voice recognition software changes voice to print to send text messages over the phone.
Fly along the 80 mph highways in Utah or Texas without moving your hands from the grips to send text messages or operate Navigation or tunes. BMW, Gold Wing, Indian, Victory and others can't match that.
Harley was way ahead of the curve on this one. 100% hands free. Now say "Bingo".

My Lincoln has the same features. I sure hope that it works better. The text to speech makes for some pretty interesting messages,

I'm sure at 80 MPH that voice recognition system is going to work like a charm - NOT. Hell, sitting in my chair my cellphone voice recognition system is right only about 2/3 of the time. When I'm on my bike, no way am I talking on the phone or sending text messages. Of course there are those that will say I'm "old school"....so have it. For me, I'll pay attention and enjoy the ride.

I cant believe Harley did not provide heated and cooled seats, drink holders, auto trunk release, power windows, all wheel drive, WTF Harley?
What about being green for christ sakes, why have you not provided an all electric plug in? Harley is still way behind the times.
Thank God they are, they should trash to touch screen crap and $uck the younger buyers and stick with old school and looks, that is what Harley is or was about.
I love my Heritage, it's a motorcycle not some hybrid Ultra touch screen Ipad crap look at me I have several USB ports!

I understand. But my point is that voice activated and hands free or not a lot of riders will be looking at the screen to see who is calling, looking at menus for mp3 folders for songs etc. it's gonna happen. How it is operated is moot. I agree with the other poster who said its up to the individual to be responsible but it just seems insane to put an entertainment center screen on a motorcycle. It's bad enough dealing with distracted drivers let alone wondering if the dudes on bikes are looking at the road or surfing through soundtracks on the screen via voice commands. I call it insanity. Others see it different obviously.
