I would like to have one but don,t think I could get on and off .
I,v got artificial knees and it,s hard to get on without a backrest .
I have a friend who has one artificial knee and another knee that needs replacing.
He didn't think he could get on and off of his Ultra with the backrest on until I convinced him to mount his bike from the right side as opposed to the left.
Try this:
From the RH side of the bike, put your right hand on and hold the brake lever and then put your right foot on the floorboard, lean your upper body as far over the bike and then step up onto the floorboard and throw your left leg over the seat and rider backrest.
Works like a charm!

[[ Jeff, are there any tricks to climbing on your bike with the backrest? With a bad hip and bad knee, I'm not sure I could lift my leg over the backrest. Thanks! ]]
Some backrests, like the Mustang on my Road Glide, "flop down" horizontally.
You can then climb aboard (as you would withOUT the backrest), then reach behind and straighten the backrest up to its normal position.
That's not what I do, however.
I stand on the left side, then raise my right leg and slide it over the seat (with the backrest vertical). Then just straighten myself up.
It's actually easier to get onto the bike doing this, than it is to get off!
