Default Pay attention!

Driving home last night and my wife and I are explaining to our son how safe we ride and she looks out for people texting and its safer with the two of us and not to worry. He is 11 and feels motorcycles are unsafe.

No more than 1/4 mile down the road there was a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder with flares out, a tow truck and another vehicle pulled over. I was in the left lane and up ahead about 100' there was a Soft tail or Dyna (dark out) riding two up. He must have been rubber necking the broken down vehicle and did not see the vehicle in front of him still going slow. He did not hit the brakes soon enough and I watched him fish tail and bump in the back of the car. He almost saved it but ended up falling over to the right.

At least they were not going fast and were probably just skinned up. I could not stop in the left lane and head to go by but there were a lot of folks already out and emergency vehicles on site.

Had to re-explain how safe they are when you pay attention but that is a hard sell.

Something similar happened to me, but it wasn't a disabled vehicle distracting me. It was a windy day and the skirt blew up on a girl walking down the sidewalk. I didn't wreck but I fish tailed when I saw the car in front of me.
Whoever says all accidents are avoidable was never in THAT situation.

This is why I NEVER rubber neck. As soon as I do, the guy in front if me will stop. I probably don't want to see it anyway.

That's a good reminder to all of us, regardless of experience, to keep our eyes moving quickly!

A recent experience I had reminded me of the same thing (but at less consequence). I was riding through the country on Thursday evening and saw a pickup coming quickly down an intersecting lane to my right. I was keeping my eye on him to make sure he was going to stop. When I turned back to the road there was a large dead possum in the road immediately in front of my front tire. No big deal. I passed over him with the front tire. But if it had been something bigger than a possum or some other type of road condition, it could have an issue. I didn't think I was fixating on the truck (which did stop), but it obviously held my attention a bit too long.

Having Leo's in our family, I not surprised, they say its not unusual to have another wreck by people that rubber neck while passing a wreck that has happened.

Thinking its really SAD that we have to Remind anyone that drives not to take their eyes off the road...

Haha, I had a small fender smack in my car from that a long time ago. Now I know to pull over first.
