We all owe a death there are no exceptions. (The green Mile) Life is a dangerous sport. (Me) Security is a farce it does not exist in nature nor is it commen among men. Life is either lived all out or not at all. (Hellen Keller.) You can wake up and decide to live huddled up in your room or you could throw your leg around the saddle, be grateful it's a beautiful day and ride. Riding sets our souls free. Is it safe, of course not. but nothing worthwhile ever is.

Yea, that's the one. Pieces of that damn carnage were strewn everywhere. As i came thru about 7:15 pm i noticed the ambulance leaving real slow. I thought then there were no survivors. I'm wondering if he didn't have a stroke or heart attack, cause he literally drove straight across a large median into the other lane and head on into the SUV.

Helluva thing for the gal on back....

Statistically speaking, using numbers from Maryland Crash Statistics, 298 people died in auto crashes in 2011 while only 76 bikers died.

Even though it happens 4 times as often, nobody posts when cagers die in crashes. I'm no statistician, but the numbers tell me I'm more likely to be killed from crashing my car than from crashing my bike.

I get the safety awareness aspect, but do we really need constant reminders of fallen riders?

Out of all the people I ride with, not a single person wears a helmet, but I think I'm going to start wearing mine and that's because of the biker down threads.

There's a weird thing I've seen lately on various sites...somone reports seeing an accident involving a bike with a description of the motorcycle...model/color, etc. All friends are then asked to post if they are okay....even if the bike is, say a full dressed, red FLH (example only), and there are 40 posts of "Safe here!", etc, from riders of all different models and colors....every time!

Not sure you are understanding the numbers.......

Because only about 4% (that's 1 out of 20) of registered vehicles are motorcycles but they make up 20% (1 out of 5) of the crash fatalities and the average motorcycle accumulates many fewer miles per year than the average car, that makes the risk of a fatal accident very, very high compared to a car. About 34x higher per mile driven.

According to a google search the risk of dying as the result of a car accident is 1 in 100. So if the risk of dying on a motorcycle is 34x higher than a car that means you have a 1 in 3 chance of dying on your bike. To put that in perspective you are more likely to die on your bike than any other single cause. Note this number assumes you always drive a motorcycle instead of a car during your entire lifetime. This also does not take into account some of us substantially reduce our risks by wearing full face helmets (1 in 3 head impacts are to the face and chin in a motorcycle crash and fatal head injuries are ~60% lower with a FF helmet compared to a DOT half helmet due to additional shock absorption and head coverage) and the use of other protective gear.

Considering I've ruined a helmet in a crash and know others who have done this too plus the high risks already present in riding a motorcycle, I would say the risk of ending your life while riding on a bike without a helmet is incredibly high.

Cause of Death / Chance of Dying from it
Motorcycle Accident 34% (assumes a motorcycle is your only means of ground transportation during your entire lifetime and only use a helmet 50% of the time)
Heart Disease 20%
Cancer 14%
Stroke 4%
Car Accident 1%
....
Suicide 0.82600000%
....
Firearm Assult 0.30000000%
....
Legal Execution 0.00170596%
......
Lighting Strike 0.0011915%
......
Asteroid Impact 0.0002000%
