Default service manual

I bought an '80 ironhead a few months ago to play with, ive got it running good and it is fun to ride around town. I want to get a service manual for it. the offical hd one is like sixty bucks and im not sure if it is worth it when the other brand manuals are around 30.

For my dyna, the hd manual has been the best thing ive bought, but the ironhead there is not that much to it.

what do yall think is it worth it

How much did you pay for the Dyna manual?
I paid about $60 bucks for mine.

A couple three six packs worth of chump change is worth buying it IMO.
You might save that much by doing some wrenching yourself, rather than a dealer or the guy down the street who will trade you that 3 six packs for his labor.

I just picked up a '76 Ironhead myself. I picked up the HD service manual and paid $60. I also picked up the Clymer and Haynes manuals (about $25 each). They're all a bit different and I got them because of that. If I had to pick up just one I'd only get the HD manual. I'm glad I have all of them so I can cross reference them.

Just bought all three HD manuals (parts, service and electrical) for my new SGS. I think they're the best thing out there.

what?! come on, you pay $20,000 for a bike you'd think you could at least spring for the $60 (get it from a discounter, more like $45) for the manual. oh, wait, you didn't spend $20k..... okay, well, come on, you bought a harley, the cream of the crop, can't you at least spend $60 for the manual?????

cheap bastard......

good luck finding the manual at a good price. every hd manual that i've looked at far exceeds the quality of the clymers/haynes manuals. don't know about back in 80 though, a little before my time. have fun with the bike

my question should have been are the clymer or haynes manuals worth a dam for the older bikes or should i get the $60 hd one

It has been a while since i had an ironhead and the last one i had i kept it running with a set a vicegrips and 70wt oil, so they are not overly complicated machines

I have all three for my Ironhead. The Haynes really isn't worth a damn. The Clymer isn't bad. The HD is the best of the three.

Obviously if you can only have one you'd pick the HD manual. That said, as i stated in my previous post, I like having the different perspectives.

I use the HD manual for everything I do to my bikes. If you want to trust some generic aftermarket manual using only vice grips and heavy weight oil, that's your choice, but HD manuals are the best manuals you can get and well worth every penny. They are year specific which the others are not, and from year to year, Harleys are not all equal.
