Yeah, thanks, we applied for the plates at our local DMV, and the clerk made the transaction. We didn't hear anything for almost a year. When we finally checked into the lapse, they explained that my wife had to be the one who was handicapped, since she was the registered owner. I guess they weren't going to tell us.
edit:I see you editted your original post and have somehow managed to skate past the DMVclerks. I will have to ask DMV why you were able to get your plates and I wasn't. Would you care to share your plate number so they can straighten out the discrepancy ?
Yeah, don't bother. I won't rat you out. Like I said, the clerk at the office accepted the transaction and was able to process it with some help. Sacto wouldn't send US the plates but would send them to you. Good 'ol DMV. Good on you. This was in 2011. Perhaps they've gotten their act together since then. Sure...
I got my original plates in 1996, so its not a new policy. I just filled out the Disabled Plates paperwork when I went to register my bike. They never even blinked, just told me that it would be a few weeks because the plates had to be sent from Sacto. I didn't think anything of it at the time because I did't know they normally have (car) plates on hand. I did not learn to drive a car until 1999, so was surprised they had disabled car plates on hand when I registered my first car.
I did have an issue with it the second time I got plates for my bike. I was an idiot (ah the stupidity of youth) when I sold my first bike, didn't realize unlike normal plates that belong to the vehicle, disabled plates belong to me. As a result I had to get new plates, and I ended up getting into it with the lady at the DMV about it because obviously if I could ride a motorcycle I wasn't disabled. Two minutes with her supervisor got everything sorted out and again I had no further issues. My guess is just try again with a different person and hope they are not a moron. Good luck!

I don't know what to tell you. Just what DMV told me in 2011-2012. Hopefully you're not calling me a liar.
Yeah, I think I kinda ran into to " how can you ride a bike and be disabled ? ", too.
How did you get plates in 1996 but not learn to drive until 1999 ? I thought you had to drive to get a bike license. But then, I remember working with a blind guy who had a car for his aide to drive. DMV is such a mess in California. Go figure.
EDIT: Didn't know about the possession of the plates, either. Partly because i've never had plates. The ignorance of youth can be permanent in some, as I keep proving.
I think we've taken this thread abit off topic...sorry everyone.

Unless Colorado is different, commercial property land owners are usually large off-shore or Asian investment corporations. Good luck asking a land owner if they want a bike ticketed.
Thanks - after 25 yrs of working for them I've now realized they've been paying me in YEN's and after doing the math that $500,000 YEN I have in my bank account is only worth $500 USD - well I guess I'll just have to keep working now

there could be differences in your situations. in one post, it sounds like techgnosis is on the registration, while in another post, it sounds like your girlfriend is the registered owner of the vehicle, even though both names are on the title.
i'm on the title and registration for both of my vehicles (not including bikes) even though my wife drives the car most of the time. i have disabled vet plates on both of the vehicles. if we go somewhere together, we usually take the car. but if she has errands to run, she takes the car, and i take the truck to work (if i cant ride my bike). she does not park in the hc spots unless i am with her....

Oh, please don't let my wife find out about my girlfriend.....

A couple of years ago i managed to break my ankle pretty badly. Two screws, some surgery and a ski boot later I got bored and rolled myself around the shop long enough to weld up a crutch holder I could stick in the receiver hitch for the trailer I sometimes pull behind the bike. Ahh back in the wind, anyway I was walking (with crutches) out of a restaurant when I heard an older gentlemen with a walker in front of me ask his wife "What kind of ******* parks a motorcycle in a handicap space." He was parked in the one next to me. I yelled ahead that I parked the bike there. The old guy got quite a chuckle when he turned around and saw me heading for the bike on crutches.
they would tow mine. I dont trust the police.
I park in the yellow strips most of the time. On the side close to the doors on the concrete at most walmarts

Nope, not calling you a liar in the least, just unlucky in dealing with the bureaucratic bullshit that is DMV.
I took the Rider Safety Program, which when successfully completed counts as your riding skills test for DMV, so I just had to take the written and do the paperwork/fees stuff. The licencing for cars and bikes follows the same set of requirements (road test / written test / fees) but are not otherwise connected. IE you can get a class M endorsement without a class C, and vice-versa.
I would check to make sure she has a qualifying disability in the DMVs eyes, best way to find out is if they will give her a placard, if she does they should give her one on the spot. Next check if its an issue with the title of your vehicle. You can register it with either 'and' or a 'or' between your names. If your title says has and between your guys names that might be the issue. If it says 'or', or just has a '/' you should be OK.
As with most bureaucracy if you don't like the initial answer try, try again till ya do.
