I'm curious. Where do you leave the placard on the bike .
Maybe it's different in Nova Scotia, but in California we have a plastic tag to hang on the mirror. That's fine in a car. But on the bike it's out there for anyone to take.
I manage several shopping centers in the Denver area and the only area that I see Motorcyclists parking on the sidewalk is in front of 24 Hr Fitness.
Really - you're going there for a work out but can't mustard the energy to walk to the front door from the parking lot!!
I gave a few a good workout as I had their scoots towed - so they got an additional workout when they had to walk home.
Never understood those that thought it was okay to park a motorcycle on a sidewalk.

It depends on the setting, but I don't think I've ever parked on an actual walkway. When I was in college, parking was at a premium so most bikes parked on the little island at the end of the rows. You could usually get 4 bikes on each one and nobody minded because we weren't taking up car spots. Now I mostly use parking spots (towards the back so cars don't think it's empty), but at restaurants, etc., I'm always on the lookout for gaps in the spots such as a few extra feet next to a sign or building where a car can't fit. Most businesses don't seem to mind you parking in the areas at the end of rows because it's dead space anyway. Just make sure it's not painted red or the fire dept will show no mercy.
I've found as long as you're not obstructing anything, most folks will leave you alone. If you're blocking a walkway you should expect someone to complain or maybe even mess with your bike.
Wellll....technically the bike is my wife's. She bought it for me and it's in her name. I applied for the plate, but in California everybody on the title needs to be handicapped to get the plate. She's not handicapped, officially. I don't really use a handicapped space often enough to go to that much trouble to change anything. There are people much more needy (except on bad days) of the spaces than I.
But, yeah, duh.....the plate WOULD be the obvious solution.

Here in Iowa as long as you qualify permanent handicap they will offer to put it on your plates free of charge.
Some (like me) don't like to let folks know they are handicapped, but the more I ride my TG the more I am thinking of getting the plate.

In Ca, the only parking tickets that can be issued on private property are handicapped and fire lane.
If I park on a sidewalk, I am more worried about a vandal kicking the bike over than a ticket.
I like to think I am discouraging bike theft by parking close in. Park in the boonies invites two guys loading your bike into a van.
We have a winner. Never park in handicapped spaces and never block fire lanes or doors. Those can get you tickets. Never understood why anyone would want to park near a handicapped person anyway. They are challenged---why would I put something I love next to someone that is limited to the point they gets special considerations? No matter where you park. You can still to be taken to civil court if someone gets hurt but that can happen anywhere. Including the parking lot. Example. If someones ill mannered under attended rug rat knocks your bike over on them anywhere anytime anyway. They can get a lawyer and try to make you liable. Will it work? It's a crap shoot. I park mostly wherever I thank the bike will be safe and where I can see it. Never blocking fire lanes or doors and in some niche if I can find it. I never park anywhere near a handicapped person spot. Been doing that since I started riding on the street.
