Question 3M Scotchguard Protection Film

I'm accesorizing my new Ultra and am contemplating adding 3M protection film on the front fender, fairing, and the top of the saddlebag, as my '09 Streetglide took a beating in these areas with rock chips, scratches, etc. Has anyone used this product and would you recommend it?

I just spent 6 hours removing it. I put it on too thin and it wouldn't peel off without breaking. If you are going to use it, put it on thick. It left an Orange peel surface when I used it. I would do it again but thicker this time. I got it off using graffiti remover. It didn't dissolve it just softened enough so I could roll it off. Wax it first per directions.

Edited for clarification: I used the 3M Paint Defender System, 90100. It's a spray on system that claims to be easily removable.

Many trike owners have used it and I've seen very few complaints. I have it on my fenders on my trike, and so far, so good. You can get spray on or sheets. If you go for the sheets, they come in different widths. There are a couple different manufacturers of sheets and some are thicker than others. The thickness is controlled by you if you use the spray. The spray also has the advantage of contouring to the body shape easier than sheets. Do it right and it will last several years before you have to peel it off and reapply, but it's a lot cheaper than a paint job, and it looks better than having a bunch of chips in your paint.

I have it on my LandRover and it comes a s a kit which is specially cut. Is there a 3M kit for FLHT for the panniers batwing and fenders?

I've done a search and there are allot of threads but i can't seam to find a kit...

Yes i know buy the film and cut it yourself... but i would rather have a stencil cut version so i know i don't f*ck up and remove my new custom pain job. I would rather spend the money and know its done correctly then have to pay for it later. Plus it give some one money for their family.

My dealer took my bags over to a local shop that did the application of the clear vinyl. Can't see it and has saved my bag lids and the front of bags ! It's money well spent IMO. Cost around $80.00

Default 3m film

I have it on my 2010 fltrx, i installed it in 2010 and it still cannot be seen. Having said that, if and when you drag your foot over the saddlebag, it will mark and does not go away, cannot polish out. I have no stone chips after 24k miles so i think it is worth it. Installation is not for the meek as you have to pull and stretch some of the pieces and you cant afford to ruin a piece.

No bike (with or without this protection) will ever go long before getting a paint nick or ding somewhere.
I don't recommend using it all over your vehicle but it can do miracles when placed properly on a vehicle.
When I left Michigan headed for Alaska my bike had 1800 miles on it.
ALL of the paint nicks and/or scratches sustained on that trip were on the "frontal surfaces" of the batwing fairing, the lower fairings, fuel tank, saddlebags, and the tow-behind trailer that.

I've also used the 3-M film on another vehicles (frontal surfaces) and in 10 years, this stuff did a fantastic job protecting my vehicle(s).

I have a local installer that does all my new vehicles. I have the 3M film installed on all my new vehicles - front bumper, hood, mirrors and headlights. This stuff really does protect your paint against rock chips and such. I also had the fairing and front fender done on my Street Glide. As I recall, they charged around $100. If you have access to a local installer I highly suggest you have them do it. There is definitely an art to installing this stuff. If done correctly it really is invisible. If not, you will see bubbles and ripples - not good.
