Tomtom app on my iphone, in a waterproof case on a Ram mount. No signal required for it to work, and I can use Bluetooth or plug it into the bike's stereo for tunes and directions.
I have the Garmin Zumo 550 on my VTX 1800 and the Garmin 660 on my Ultra. The 550 is no longer made but I probably like it better than the 660. Check ebay for both.
Question to the OP. How much did you pay for your bike ? Sorry but any time this comes upI can just shake my head. Point is you paid at least 10K for your bike so why not put a GPS on it that was designed for a bike ? I tried the cheap route and the cables will only last so long even if the GPS does not get ruined in the rain. I have had my Garmin Zumo 660 for at least 4 years and has been through countless rainstorms and a few snowstorms. But I have 2 philosophies:
You get what you pay for.
I am too poor to buy cheap chit.
I am not in love with GPS coupled with motorcycles.
I use my phone to plan the route, and then put it back in my pocket, to only pull it out if I miss turns.
I was shopping for a waterproof GPS recently but, like the OP, I didn't want to spend a fortune. What I found was the Garmin Zumo 350 LMT which was on sale for $499 ($200 off the list price). It is a full featured unit and comes with several mounting options including a very clever quick release bracket. Unfortunately I believe that this unit is now discontinued which explains why the deep discount. It may still be available in the USA.
I use maps and sometimes get a little lost, but that is ok, part of the fun.
It is nice to know where gas stations are if you are not familiar with the area. That said, if you want a GPS, I'll bet you can one on Craigslist for $60-$90 dollars. May not be waterproof, but it didn't cost $600 either.
mikelikesbikes..I have never thought of it that way. I am just looking for the best bang for my bike. I don't mind spending the coin as long as its a good product. Thanks everyone for the input. seems maps are still the way to go. But its nice to find a beer and wing joint in a hurry when your hungry after a long day of riding!
