I'm gonna be goin to Sturgis this year, bunch of us rented a house in Deadwood. Gonna be havin a meeting soon to discuss among other things the route to and from. Leaving from Southern California, but interested in anybody's route opinions that've traveled from any of the western states, cause we can always go outa the way...cuz it's all about the journey, right? Oh, and include pictures if ya got any!
This year will be my first Pilgrimmage to Sturgis from here in San Diego, so dont know from personal knowledge, but my dad has taken the trip a couple times now. We plan to go this year on our E-G's via the Calif coast up thru Oregon, then cut east along the Wash/Oreg border and thru Idaho, Montana and down into Wyoming, etc. It sounds wonderful, I'm more excited about the ride than the destination I know that! On our way home we're taking the Southern route as yet undetermined...
Any way coming across from Yellowstone is real nice. Otherwise coming up through the Black Hills on 385 is damn nice but you will probably ride that while you are out there since it's the road to Rushmore and Needles Hwy. As far as just getting there I would look at 15 up through Vegas and then across somewhere around Yellowstone. Anywhere in the rockies is great for beautiful scenery, it depends on how many days you have. Good luck with the trip and ride safe.
Last time I was in the area was before digital cameras but there is a link to a web page in the Sturgis thread that has some great pics from a guy that went up through Idaho falls, Yellowstone and over to the Black hills.
Forget Sturgis - out of conrol. Stay in Deadwood, ride the Black Hills in the daytime, play blackjack and drink beer at the Deadwood casinos at night. Hell of a lot of fun, not hear the amount of people and hassle, unless you want to go to the camp grounds and slobber over the ****.
Stayed at Deer Mountain - outside of Lead, last year. My ride was across from Virginia - - but, back in the day, I went from Orange County, through Vegas, Salt Lake City, through Jackson Hole (greatest scenery I can recall) Yellowstone, then straight to Sturgis. It's a great trip - enjoy the ride which-ever road you take!
Take the "Going To the Sun Highway" through Galcier National Park in Montana. A MUST for every motorcyclist who enjoys twisty roads and beautiful scenery. DON'T take iton a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. The heavy traffic will ruin it for you.
Lots of great ways to get there. My Dad and I went last year from Portland. Took I-84 east then cut into SW Washington. Went through Idaho and over Lolo pass in the Bitteroot mts. Unbelievable scenery. Next day we went from Missoula MT east to the Beartooth Hwy and down into Yellowstone. Next day was spent in Yellowstone and then headed south through Grand Tetons and Jackson all the way to Green River WY. That night we met some friends coming from No Cal. From the Green River/Rawlins area, the scenery kind of goes away until you get into the Sturgis area. Went home from Sturgis to Cody the first night. Second day was back through Yellowstone and into Ontario OR. Next day home. Stayed off the Interstate as much as possible. Check out Craters Nat'l park in ID if you get the chance. Really cool place.
Lotta great ideas here...gettin me pumped up. Partial to seeing Yellowstone and have heard the Tetons are are worthy...I'm gonna push the group toward a northern influence. Thanks all!

Coming from SoCal gives you a number of good choices.
Take 15 out of Vegas. Cut across southern Utah. See Escalante, Monument valley, Moab. Cut through northern CO, and see Dinasaur Nat Mon, steamboat springs, and North Park.
Cut through southern CO, and go through Cortez, Durango, Silverton, and Telluride. Take I-70 west, and go up through Winter Park, Grand Lake, and across the divide at Rocky Mountain National Park on Trail Ridge Road. This would be my personal choice.
