I use a beat up novelty helmet that few would want anyway and have never had one stolen.
Even so if my bike's going to be out of sight for very long my helmet gets locked in a hard bag.

I know if its not bolted some @$$hole will take it but I still hang mine on the passenger peg on the low-side in front of the saddlebag on my King. It has always been there when I come back. I've been hanging it, unlocked, for a few years now. If worried about it you can use a gun lock (the wrapped cable will not scratch the paint), or you can pick up a kit from HD.

I leave the helmet in the garage and make sure the garage is locked. In Illinois, we still have that option. When I ride in a state requiring a helmet, I have never had a problem just leaving the helmet on the seat of the bike. Sometimes even a leather jacket and other misc. stuff.

Been almost 20 years since the helmet law passed here and I've never done anything other than hang it on the handlebars. Never seen one stolen nor heard of one being stolen.

I don't wear a fancy helmet and neither does anyone I know so maybe that's why our are always where we left them.

wanted a helmet lock for my Shoei and asked the local Pocatello, ID Harley dealer, he stated he didn't have one until he actually checked the parts wall, it had been there since it opened and nobody ever wanted it. Needless to say Helmets aren't mandatory in Idaho. I use a caribeener to secure my helmet. it's not a lock, but it takes a bit of effort to get it off, so if someone really wants the helmet, it won't be as easy as just grabbing it.

I never locked my helmet and just put it on my seat.

I know I risk someone will take it. But I look at it this way--if someone is desperate enough that they have to have a used helmet that has been gumped up with sweat and all kinds of funk for the last year and a half; or or if they are that poor they have to resort to trying to sell someone's nasty stolen, used helmet on ebay, please take it as a donation to the poor and buy yourself a meal.

It is like stealing someone else's toothrbush or putting on someone else's underwear that has fresh skid marks in it. Nasty Nasty Nasty.
