Default Pegs on the engine guard?

Got my hwy pegs today, gonna put them on tonight... Question is, Do i need to put anything on the guard itself where the peg will be mounted, A buddy told me he put masking tape around the guard right where the clamp was going to keep it from moving. I was just gonna clamp the damn thing to the bar and roll on...

Mine went right on the bar. Never had them move.

Not sure what the common thought is on this (i.e. may prevent slippage, damage to paint/chrome), but I had to put a layer of thin rubber (kind of like a piece of an innertube) there when I mounted mine (aftermarket engine guard) as there was no other way to get them tight. If anything, I don't see it hurting anything; maybe just a way to tighten them a bit better. Old ones I took off the stock engine guard did not have anything in between them. Works great so far btw, they don't move or slide around.

Some put a little clear tape on the bars to protect them from scratches, but most just bolt them to the bars.

I think the tape will just make them slip, and it will make a mess, and it will be ugly, and if the clamp is going to scratch the bar a piece of tape isn't going to help.

I bolted mine directly onto the bar, no rubber, no nuthin.

Just bolted mine with plenty of room left after tightening them to tighten them more if needed.

I've always put a layer of black electrical tape around the handlebars or crash bar before mounting accessories. Don't know if it really helps protect chrome, but nothing has ever slipped. Could be just another one of those "I've always done it that way" things...

I have moved my pegs quite a few times trying to find the right spot, and
they never left any marks that I could see. Of course my eyesight isn't what
it used to be either.
I had them clamped down goodentight too, no tape or anything else.

No tape here. Clamped right to the guard. Never moved.

Best bet is to rub the gremlin bell twice, walk around the bike backward three times, install the tape with the name of the person who gave you the bell written on it, then install the highway peg clamps. Once each clamp is instilled repeat the same steps in reverse.

Just in case.
