Default fatboy chrome wheel cleaning

need advice on an abrasive material and solvent to clean my rims. previous owner did not clean the wheels and the brake dust buildup is so bad it almost looks like pitting. I used some of the solvent for getting melted boot rubber off the pipes on a small area of the rear rim and with a **** ton of elbow grease it comes off nicely. just wondering if anybody has an easier solution before I spend a lot of time on this project.

Also, how do I post a picture of the area that I got cleaned off?

Welcome to the forum

What solvent have you used? Most people use Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove material melted onto their pipes. Others will probably recommend using 0000 steel wool. They say it does not leave any scratches but I don't have the "warm and fuzzies" to use any type of steel wool on metal I want to look nice.

This subforum explains how to post pictures

Wife has a Vrod with solid rims. A bear to keep clean. I use mothers or mcquires mag rim polish and a mothers buffer ball on the drill once my hands get tired. I use every old teeshirt I can put my hands on and give it a few hours of my time.

For anything chrome you would use hydrochloric acid. A sponge should work with that. Don't get the acid on anything else though. If need be. The 0000 steel wool will help.

I used the boot mark remover from the HD dealer to get the melted rubber off the pipes, another previous owner mishap. I wondered about the steel wool, I refurbished an antique revolver once that was a bit rusty and the 000 steel wool removed the rust and left the blue looking decent. I was worried about the steel scratching the chrome though. with the boot mark remover I just left some in a concentrated area for about 10 minutes to kind of loosen up the break dust on the rim and scrubbed the **** out if it with a wash rag/finger nail combo. came out looking great but was it was a lot of scrubbing to get it off. if I have to use that method I will but I'm looking for an easier way because it's gonna take some time that way

added the picture as an attachment, if it shows up you can see how bad the rims is covered and the lip of the rim is where I cleaned it up

Not to hijack your thread, but mg dad's '07 fat boy wheels started rusting real bad around the chrome lip between the spokes and the tire. Elbow grease got rid of the surface rust, but there are srill marks where it was and it looks like hell. Would any of thoses remedies help with that? Thanks!

once it's pitted the only option is replace or have them chromed again. I don't think mine have gotten to the pitting point yet but I haven't made it up behind the rotor to clean where the worse part is
