Default Intake mod question

Hey guys/gals,

My next mod is going to be an intake and tuner. So far, I like the Cobra intake with a Power Commander tuner.

JP Cycles has a LOT of reviews on all of their intakes. The impression I'm getting from reading the reviews is that there doesn't seem to be any substantial power increase. Some say their bike has "Come alive" and others say they notice no increase, only improvement in looks and sound.

So, my question here is.....what intake does everyone have and do you notice any substantial power increase? Dyno figures would be great if anyone had them too.

So far, this is the intake I've got picked out https://www.denniskirk.com/185184.sk...utm_medium=cse

The reason I like this one is that it's not all open and looks as if it would withstand a rain storm. I don't want one where I have to carry a rain sock around with me.

Thanks,

Tom

The power increase results from doing a complete Stage-1 upgrade. Mufflers, Air filter, and tuner. If done individually, the power increase is minimal. The combination of free flowing mufflers/pipes and air filter open up the engine breathing, and the tuner adjusts the fuel delivery required for the other changes.

A stage-1 upgrade will usually result in an increase of 7-10 HP. If done correctly you will end up with a smoother running engine and increased acceleration/horsepower. Most people are very happy with the result.

Most aftermarket intakes provide more than adequate airflow for stage-1 and beyond, so choices are frequently based on style.

It reminds me of the car scoops when I was a teen!

Anyway...who carries a rain sock? I leave mine on my bike and we've been through some heavy rains and the bikes never coughed, spit or sputtered.

Cool. That's good to know. I've always wondered about the rain sock thing.

The Outlaw 587 Air Cleaner Systems is available with a variety of different covers, some require rain socks, some don't. It can also be used with the stock cover.

Below are some dyno charts showing that the increase is significant enough to make a real difference in daily riding.

This chart is of just a change in the Air Cleaner...stock tune and stock exhaust.

Here's a chart showing the difference between stock and a Stage 1 (exhaust, Outlaw 587 air cleaner, and a generic tune) Whole different bike.

Here's another chart showing a bike with free flowing pipes, XiED product and stock air cleaner, compared to same pipes, same XiED product, with the addition of the Outlaw 587 Air Cleaner, and some TTI's to bring back the drop in torque from the free flowing pipes. Again plenty of difference to feel in daily riding.

On of the reasons the Outlaw Air Cleaners typically deliver a better increase is that they are not routing the hot oily air from the engine back into the air cleaner. Engines run best with cool dry air combined with gasoline. The hot oily air just reduces performance AND builds up carbon deposits on the pistons.

Here is a link to an objective overview of the popular tuners.

I searched around, and just last night ordered from DKcustoms. The external venting was the deciding factor for me, and I could only find one other company that had that set up.

This morning I received a shipping email and to expect product in 3-5 days.

I was torn between the intake I bought (a transparent 587) or going with an old school Velocity stack.

I really wanted a Goodson air cleaner, but didn't want to wait, and they only come in polished aluminum. I'm bad at keeping polished metal polished

98% of the thousands using these have no issues. Hard riding in hot weather may leave a very light film, but not enough to drip.

If you are getting more than that, the info in the following thread may be useful.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/oil-a...f-my-bike.html

All of the traditional hose & filter style breathers at this LINK are compatible with the Outlaw Air Cleaners, and if you have any indications that your bike has excessive oil carry-over, one of them would be a better choice.

I personally really like the look of the Premium Discrete Head Breather System and am running it on one of my bikes, the others have the Breather Bolts.
