Default rigid to softail....

this is gonna sound odd but bare with me please...I ride an old rigid ironhead....absolutely love how it rides !!!! I picked up an 04 softail standard...not overly impressed with the ride...actually prefer the rigid...when riding the softail in the wind high speeds etc the bike has a slight side to side sway...swing arm bushings are good fall away is good bearings are good ect...I assume its just how a sofatil handles..would adjusting the suspension to a stiffer setting reduce the sway any ??

Regards Mortician....

Hmmm, I'm not getting any of that behavior when riding my softail.

I have heard several people call them slop tails , the solid rear wheel you will notice wind much more than if it were not solid.

It maybe the rear wheel, Or someting it been missed in the inspection. My ST doesnt do that at all. My buddies Fat Boy it a tough ride in the wind because of the wheels.. REALLY DUMB IDEA - my ST was skirting in the wind and I was told it was the tires.. It was..

Coming off a rigid anything else will be wishy-washy. Rigids are on rails. Those that dont own one wont realize the difference.

You are going the wrong way. The problem is over steer from the front. Free up the steering head nut. be sure the clinch bolts are loose. Come down just snug with just a few lbs torque and set the fallaway to the minimum. When you first ride, you will say way to free. In an hour, you will say it handles like a sport bike (anyway close) but on the interstate, it will tract straight and true. You will no longer steer with the bars then. It's body English..all it takes.

that's what I was also thinking...I may change the rear rim to a 40 spoke 16 inch just take it back to stock...leave the 21 up front....but will adjusting the suspension so its a bit stiffer will that help ?? as well as a spoke rear rim...

front and rear tires are brand new avon venoms....

The only way the wind would effect the bike with the solid Fat Boy wheels is when it is standing still.
When any bike is at any normal speed, whether they have stock Fat Boy wheels or not, the wind will not pass through the wheels.
The profile of the rider on the bike probably causes as much or more wind wind resistance as the wheels.
