Stopped at a light, watched the car behind me stop at a safe distance
Just back from the mountains on a postcard spectacular day, not a care in the world.
With no warning the lady behind me hit the gas while the light was still red.
POW.
Some time ago, my good friend and a major miler got rear ended at a light. Told me since then he always points his wheel off to the side and I made that a practice until it became a habit. So I had both feet planted, stopped on the right third, tire pointing slightly off to the side of the Dodge Ram in front of me.
She pushed me about 5 or 6 feet forward and off to the side of the Ram before I knew what happened. I just rode it out.
I really wanted to be pissed off and ream her a new one but she was so nice, so calm and apologetic that she made that impossible.
The FXDXT has a fender mount for the bag and has a big piece of steel wrapped around the inside lip of the fender. It acted like a bumper. That's why I shot forward instead of getting crumpled.
About $800 in damages that no one else will ever notice and she is insured.
The first thought I had after I figured out what happened was that I was glad I took my friends real life lesson seriously and adjusted my technique because of it.
At the very least it saved my forks, and who knows what else.
I'm kidding, fogline. Glad the rear end didn't turn out as bad as it could have. Yeah, it's tough to get angry at someone who is truly sorry for what they did and prepared to pay for what they've done. Too bad there aren't more people like that, the world would be a better place.
Yea Thumper, I knew I should have listened to you in the first place.
It is odd how I felt robbed of my self-righteous furry. I couldn't yell or cuss or threaten.
Kinda took some of the fun out of it.
I've made it a habit to keep my wheels pointed straight when stopped to make a turn when stopped on a two-lane to avoid getting shoved into oncoming traffic if I get hit from the back, I never thought bout this scenario.
