02 Wide glide issues
I just bought my first Harley and have been trailered 3 times in 5 rides. I am excited about the bike, but the issues are taking the shine off the apple!
Here's my problem:
After running the bike for a while I can stop for a break, but eventually the bike starts to act up. First the speedometer starts to stick and/or stop reading at all, then the digital mileage gauge cuts out. After that, the engine starts to cut in and out, sputter, back fire and eventually dies. When I try to start it back up, the starter just clicks or does nothing. I have been able to charge the battery and get home, but have the same issue on the next run.
Here what I've done:
-checked the voltage regulator, good
-Checked the stator, good output
- batter is good and holds the charge over night
-voltage makes it to the battery to charge it when sitting in the garage
Stressed out here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jay

Get the bike hot and check each stator connector to ground for continuity - there should be none. Then check across the leads. Should be 0 to just a few tenths of an ohm.
When the bike is hot, perform the stator AC output test.
Make certain your voltage regulator has a good ground (I might be wrong but doesn't that one ground through the body) If it is, we used to put star washers between them and the frame on some bikes.
If you get the bike to act up, check to see what it is charging at the posts and on the cables - see if there is a difference.
Carefully check the cables - a bad cable could be the cause of this as it acts as resistance.
Also, how old is the battery. It might have a plate defect that only occurs when it gets hot.
Just some thoughts. Hope they help.
