Default New Harley ?

Ok I am hopefully pending credit approval, going to buy a Harley Sportster tommorrow. It is the Harley Sportster 1200C Red&Grey w. security feature. The tag price is $10,800.00 .
Is that fair or will most Harley Dealers work with that price. I got pre approved for 12,500.00 but want to have plenty for TT&L which left about $800.00 for a Helmet and Jacket and accessories for safety. Would it be out of line to want them to add a free or reduced priced winshield at that sticker price or am I getting a fair deal.

Also this is my first bike. Is this a wise choice. I am turning 30 in march and am 5'6" and 240 so am a pretty beefy guy. I was afraid to go with the 800cc model since my weight. Any other recommendation as far a bike or add-ons???? How much should I expect for forward controls or are they standard on the 05 models?

Sorry for the stupid newbie questions, but thought I would ask the experienced riders here........................

Hello,
The sportys are great bikes. Definitely go with the 1200. Two reasons, your weight and just the fact that after your riding for a while, you will want the bigger engine anyway. You made a great choice so be happy and content with your decision. There is an assload of additions for the sportsters. You can go nuts if you want. FOrward controls for me are a necessity but I'm 6'3". It's all about your personal comfort. As you ride your bike , it will tell you exactly what it needs for you. Enjoy!

List on a 1200C is 9,715, the security system is 275, and shipping is 195 for a total of 10,145. 10,800 is very close to MSRP and dealers usually don't go below MSRP. I would deal for the windshield, and if not free, at least at a good discount. If there is more than one dealer in the area, check around and work them.

Regards,

Bill

GunLocators, get your bike and ride it.

It's all up to your own personal preferences as to what add-ons you may or may not want or need.
Give it a chance AS-IS.
or
If you know what look and feel you want already, go for it... you should get a break on the initial cost.
... enjoy!

Like one guy said, you should perhaps try the bike as is for a bit before you start adding stuff. Also, you can get helmets and riding gear at places much cheaper than the local HD shop. For those of you who bleed black and orange, forgive my last suggestion. Consider having the HD shop book a store credit for the $800 then you can come back and get stuff as you decide and not be out the cash. You are financing your accessories over the life of the loan, but that's OK.

Your price sounds right in line...he probably has a fee to register the bike for you, and a fee to build up the bike when he gets it...though there is very little they do to them any more.

You will have a difficult time trying to beat MSRP, so get the bike, you're in the neighborhood. Try to get him to throw in chrome or the windshield...they will normally give you something.

Congrats on that new purchase, be sure and visit the forum often, and remember to post some pics!

sounds pretty much correct. msrp for the two-tone is $9915. $9715 is for pearl or sunglo. plus, you're missing the $400 or so for set up and prep costs here...which would bring the $10,800 about in line. sounds like a fair deal to me.

i would try for a windshield or something. it's easier to negotiate at this time of year. but, my opinion is that you won't get it. if this is the case, try for 30% off or something.

Well I went and bought the sportster. It will be delivered today at 4pm. I really F**Ked Up. Its been a heck of a day. I told the sales man I have riden a BMW a couple times short distaces but its been 8 years ago and really consider my self a newbie. So after prep I rode around the parking lot and was not really too comfortable so he said take it down the road and come back. Well I did not lean far enough to turn on the road and barely touched the throttle and laid it on its side, cause it went off the road when turning and I hit some gravel. The bike , tank pipes ect does not have a scratch I caught my self before it went totally down and tried to raise the bike as I went to the ground hoping to save it from too much damage. There was a tree the head light hit as it was coming to a stop and screwed it up. I felt like a total dumb a$$. I cost me $270 to get it replaced so it will look showroom new. I decided not to ride it home. I have a friend that rides so I am going to go with him and ride it in a stadium parking lot for a while before hitting any streets.

I was just happy my wife did not flip out. It shook her up but not too bad. Am I totally a dumb idiot or what? The whole idea hurt my pride more than anything.

Hey, **** Happens. At least you didn't get hurt and it only cost you 270.00... Could have been a hell of a lot worse.
Count your blessings.
I gotta hand it to you for having the nuts to tell us what happened.
